The light of science shines brightly! The 2025 Future Science Awards are announced
2025-08-07
The light of science illuminates the future of humanity. On August 6th, the highly anticipated 2025 Future Science Award was announced. This summer, basic research on "high cold" has once again become "hot". Why are they commended for bravely venturing into the 'no man's land' of science? The hypothesis that "birds originated from dinosaurs" can become a widely accepted scientific theory, which is based on the work of Ji Qiang, a professor of Hebei University of Geosciences, and Xu Xing, Zhou Zhong, and researchers of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences over the years. Therefore, these three scientists were awarded the "Life Science Award". In the 1990s, Ji Qiang reported the world's first feathered non avian dinosaur fossil discovered in the Liaoxi region of China, marking the beginning of the discovery of feathered dinosaur fossils. Xu Xing, Zhou Zhonghe discovered and studied a series of transitional species from dinosaurs to birds, providing conclusive evidence for the evolution of birds from theropod dinosaurs. Topological electronic materials are a major discovery in the field of condensed matter physics in recent years, which has opened up broad application prospects for spintronics, quantum computing, and energy technology. However, finding and discovering topological materials is very difficult. Fang Zhong, a researcher of the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dai Xi, a professor of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Ding Hong, deputy director of the Li Zhengdao Institute of Shanghai Jiaotong University, won the "Material Science Award" for their outstanding contributions to the calculation, prediction and experimental realization of topological electronic materials. Fang Zhong and Dai Xi developed a complete set of computational methods and were the first to predict a series of topological materials such as topological insulators, quantum anomalous Hall materials, and Weyl semimetals. Ding Hong first experimentally verified the existence of Weyl fermions in the semi metallic materials predicted by Fang Zhong and Dai Xi. The method they pioneered has been widely adopted by scientists worldwide. The Future Science Award has gone through a 10-year history, dedicated to promoting basic scientific research and recognizing original breakthroughs. So far, more than 40 winners have been selected, and it has developed into a highly influential folk science and technology award. Renowned scientists such as Yuan Longping, Wang Zhenyi, Xue Qikun, and Shi Yigong have all won this award. In recent years, from national awards such as the National Science and Technology Award and the National Innovation Excellence Award, to civil science and technology awards such as the Future Science Award and the Science Exploration Award, a variety of awards and honors have been continuously enriched, inspiring scientific and technological workers to devote themselves to research, use technology to lead the future, and change the world. When the award-winning video was connected, Xu Xing was wearing a straw hat and conducting field research in the mountains and valleys of Yunnan, continuing to explore the dinosaur world billions of years ago. The process of scientific discovery is arduous, but the joy it brings is indescribable. Exploring nature freely is one of the greatest charms of paleontology. ”Xu Xing said that science has a temperature, and he hopes that through our scientific research, we can promote a more harmonious relationship between humans and nature, as well as between humans and society. Not only dedicated to scientific research, but also worked hard to popularize science, which almost ran through Zhou Zhonghe's research career. He said, "Scientists should not only bury their heads in their own fields, but also sow the seeds of curiosity for the next generation. With a scientific research attitude, they should popularize science and let the light of science shine into the hearts of more people, illuminating a more distant future." These simple expressions may echo the expectations carried by the Future Science Award: encouraging scientists to continue exploring the forefront and unknown, shaping the trajectory of scientific development with wisdom, and making more scientific contributions that will affect the future.
