The industry generally regards the creation of the "Imitation of Tang Music and Dance" in Xi'an in 1982 and the official opening of the Tang Music Palace in 1988 as the beginning of tourism and performing arts in China. Tourism performance refers to an artistic activity that presents the unique geographical features and cultural context of a scenic area or attraction to viewers through performances. It is mostly performed in scenic areas, showcasing local scenery or historical culture, and is mainly aimed at travel agency customers. The experience of watching performances in scenic spots may become a memorable moment in many people's travel memories. Since the 1980s, tourism performance has undergone several iterations. Nowadays, under the background of cultural tourism integration, cultural tourism performance is not just a small fragment of travel, but its connotation and extension have been greatly expanded, providing enormous space for professional creative forces. In terms of connotation, cultural and tourism performances have further expanded in terms of execution subject, carrying function, program content, performance group, and audience compared to tourism performances. In terms of execution entities, the investment or operation entities of tourism and performing arts are mainly state-owned tourism systems or private tourism enterprises, while cultural and tourism performance entities include local cultural and tourism bureaus, state-owned cultural and artistic groups, and private performing arts institutions. In terms of carrying function, tourism and performing arts are mostly accessories of scenic spots, while cultural and tourism performances can not be attached to scenic spots and attract tourists with their own artistic charm, such as the "Only" series of theatrical fantasy works. In terms of program content, tourism performances mainly feature song and dance programs with regional characteristics. Cultural and tourism performances include both regional opera, dance, and other programs, as well as works that are independent of the region and have unique characteristics, such as the immersive drama "Sleepless Night" Shanghai version produced by Shanghai Culture and Broadcasting Performing Arts Group. In terms of performance teams, early tourism performance teams were mostly composed of villagers around the performance site, or students trained in local art vocational schools to form art troupes, with relatively limited professional levels. Some cultural and tourism performance teams were actors from state-owned art troupes of the project subject, while others were graduates from art universities recruited by the project subject company from the society, resulting in a significant improvement in professional competence. In terms of audience, the audience for tourism performances is mostly travel agency guests, mainly middle-aged and elderly people, while the audience for cultural and tourism performances is mostly individual travelers, mainly middle-aged and young people. The extension of cultural and tourism performances is also broader than tourism performances. Tourism performances mainly focus on real-life scenarios and theme parks, while cultural and tourism performances also include on-site performances targeting tourists in non scenic areas such as traditional theaters or new performing arts spaces, as well as theatrical tours aimed at promoting tourism in a certain area. Cultural and tourism performances can be regarded as art performance activities primarily aimed at attracting and serving audiences from different regions. It is a further expansion of tourism performance, not only a testing ground for current artistic innovation, but also providing new space for the integration and development of traditional drama.
