135 Military Station

On the 3176 kilometer Sichuan Tibet Highway from Chengdu to Lhasa, there are dozens of military stations stationed, including one named after a number - the 135 military station, which is memorable. The environment on the Sichuan Tibet Highway is harsh and the conditions are difficult, requiring the construction of a military station every tens of kilometers to provide logistical support. Most military stations are named after local place names, for example, the military station near Yajiang County is called Yajiang Military Station, and the military station near Litang County is called Litang Military Station. From Yajiang Military Station to Litang Military Station, which is over 130 kilometers away, one has to climb over two snow capped mountains with an altitude of over 4000 meters, namely Jianziwan Mountain and Kazila Mountain. Based on the road conditions and vehicle conditions at that time, an additional military station had to be built in the middle to meet the needs of the officers and soldiers. But this section of the road is full of high mountains and canyons along the way, with almost no suitable places for building military stations. The site selection team came here to survey and compare repeatedly, and finally found a flat land in a mountain valley that barely met the conditions. As agreed, the military station will be built here. There is no village in front of this place, no shop behind it, and it cannot be found on the map. What is the name of the military station? Just when everyone was at a loss, a comrade had a sudden idea and pointed to the number "135" on the milestone by the roadside, saying, "Let's call it the 135 Army Station. Everyone thought this proposal was good, so the only military station named after a number on the Sichuan Tibet Highway was born. The 135th Army Station has an altitude of over 4100 meters, with snow capped mountains visible from the door. The temperature and pressure are extremely low, the air is thin, and the climate is unpredictable. It can be described as "a group of soldiers on a high mountain, with no smoke for a hundred miles around". Due to environmental and logistical limitations, most of the passing troops only have lunch at the 135 unit station, refuel and replenish water before rushing to the next station, and do not stay overnight here. The most desired thing for the officers and soldiers of the military station is to have a convoy stay for one night, so that they can communicate with their comrades who stay overnight and learn more about the situation in the "mainland". In the 1990s, I accompanied an independent automobile company on a transportation training mission along the Sichuan Tibet Highway and stayed overnight at the 135th Army Station. When our convoy was still 1 kilometer away from the military station, the officers and soldiers of the station raised the red flag and beat drums and gongs, as lively as a festival. The dinner of that day was hot pot, with only canned Braised pork belly, canned ham sausage, dehydrated cabbage and boiled noodles. However, this was also the only hot meal I had on my westward and eastward trip back to Sichuan Tibet. At that time, each fleet was equipped with a meal delivery truck, and the meal delivery time reported by the truck before the station was difficult to match the actual arrival time of the fleet. The fleet was also unable to report the delay in a timely manner. As soon as we arrived at the station, we had to fetch hot water that could only be half boiled, soaking the cold food to eat. At that time, there were only more than 10 officers and soldiers in the 135th Army Station. They lived a lonely life of "soldiers watching soldiers during the day and counting stars at night" all year round. Even watching TV news and reading newspapers and magazines were extremely luxurious, often "daily newspapers turned into monthly reports, one big hug, and news became old news". It is interesting that soldiers in the military station usually read letters from their relatives, friends, classmates, even their wives or girlfriends together. The military station documents not only manage newspapers and magazines such as the People's Liberation Army Daily and the War Flag Daily, but also manage the family letters of each comrade in the military station. On every study day, after finishing studying the articles in the newspaper, each comrade in arms reads their latest home letters. This indicates that the conditions at the military station were harsh and isolated, and the cultural life of the officers and soldiers was monotonous, which also reflects the close friendship between comrades. With the upgrading and transformation of the Sichuan Tibet Highway, as well as the adjustment and reform of the military organization system, the 135th Army Station has also completed its historical mission and been reorganized and abolished. The military station named after a number, and the group of high-altitude soldiers who read family letters and share affection, left a deep impression on me. (New Society)
