Hong Kong issues the fourth black rainstorm warning signal in 8 days

2025-08-05

The Hong Kong Observatory issued another black rainstorm warning signal on the morning of the 5th, which was the fourth time in 8 days that the Observatory issued the highest level rainstorm warning signal, breaking the record of the most "black rain" issued by the Observatory in a year. The rainstorm warning signal is black, indicating that a rainstorm with an hourly rainfall of more than 70mm has been recorded or is expected to occur in a wide area of Hong Kong, and the rain is likely to continue. The weather in Hong Kong has been consistently unstable recently. The Observatory issued a black rainstorm warning signal at 11:45 p.m. on August 4, and then changed to red and yellow rainstorm warning signals at 2:10 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. on August 5. On the morning of the 5th, the impact of thunderstorm areas on Hong Kong was further strengthened. At 5:50, the Observatory changed the black rainstorm warning signal. It is reported that this is the shortest time since the Observatory recorded the "black rain" warning. The last time there were two "black rain" warnings with the shortest distance between them was on August 23-24, 1999, when the two "black rain" warnings were about 16 hours apart. During the rainstorm, the hourly rainfall of more than 100 mm was recorded in many districts of Hong Kong, including Tsuen Wan, Tai Po in the New Territories and parts of Hong Kong Island. The Drainage Services Department and other departments of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government have taken measures to respond, including deploying powerful drainage robots to handle the accumulated water. Due to adverse weather conditions, some public services and activities in Hong Kong have been suspended. The Home Affairs Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has opened temporary shelters for those in need of temporary accommodation. (New Society)
