AI cannot write the song of the soul
2025-07-31
As an original musician, I am often asked the following question: In the era of artificial intelligence, as long as instructions are given, songs are immediately output: Microsoft Xiaobing has created thousands of songs, OpenAI's Jukebox can imitate any music style, so do you musicians still have such persistence in creating, producing, and performing? Will artificial intelligence sweep the entire original music industry? Is music creation facing extinction like many precarious industries? It has to be said that the emergence of artificial intelligence is indeed accelerating the process of music creation transformation. It can accurately provide music styles, such as Chinese style and rock style, after massive searches in a short period of time; It can also provide a variety of rich musical elements, such as a mix and match of various instrumental instruments; It can even replace the work of many producers, generating structurally complete and even creative melodies. But the essence of this kind of "creation" is a game of statistical probability - you give a starting note, AI will calculate the next most likely note to appear, it is created for the sake of creation, accurate but not clear. From a philosophical perspective, AI lacks human touchable emotions, which is the original driving force behind artistic creation. The reason why music is moving is precisely because it carries people's struggles, passions, and pains in society. But AI does not have a 'self', so there is no need to express survival anxiety through art. AI will never be able to experience the human survival situation - its choices are a collection of cold data under infinite search, and our choices must be taken responsibility for or even paid for. AI creation does not have a fate that requires confrontation, therefore, its "creation" inevitably lacks life experience, and it cannot possess the power to penetrate people's hearts and the tension of artistic expression. So, although AI creation can have those fancy words piled up, neatly arranged rhymes, and may be good when read in single sentences or paragraphs, when read in its entirety, it may feel that the theme is not clear, making it difficult to make a name for itself and even quickly forgotten in the ocean of big data. Undoubtedly, it cannot write a song of the soul. How to write a song of the soul? Then there must be a profound life experience. I have a piece called 'Agujiqu' written for my deceased daughter, where every note is soaked in my father's tears; The phrase 'The moon hangs coldly in the sky, knowing that tomorrow will be a farewell' in 'Farewell to a Friend' depicts the common emotions of humanity. And when I sang 'You laugh, I can't see through the flowers and water, I sigh, you don't understand my deep affection' in 'The Lonely King', this feeling is something that AI cannot understand. It cannot perceive what 'loneliness' is because its way of' existence 'is completely different from that of humans. AI can perfectly mimic the form of music, but it can never replicate the soul tremors that come from life experiences after experiencing life and death, pain. The sky is about to light up, but my heart is crying. What I am conveying is a unique experience of a specific moment in life, which cannot be simplified into data. I am also thinking about why the singing of "Stranger Friend, Listen to Me" in "Children of the West Tower" can instantly break the hearts of millions of people. Many years ago, I also had a dream of returning to my hometown with full honor. That's because we all have the hardships of struggle, the attachment to our hometown, and the persistence of our dreams. When I went home in despair after several adventures, I sat on the small stool in front of the door, watching the sunset slowly melt. What I most wanted to sing was this sentence, which is also the common voice of wandering wanderers. Undoubtedly, all the ethnic music that can be left behind comes from the nourishment of life and the call of life. Works deeply rooted in life come from life, from the people. It is not a deliberate experience, it is your daily life. Cooking and washing dishes with family, chatting with friends about homesickness and memories, it is the perseverance and courage that you have experienced in society; It is not carved out, but gradually gathered energy through persisting in reading, collecting labor songs in the fields, traditional customs and music for weddings, funerals, and ancestor worship, and exploring ancient cultures of various ethnic groups. It may not even have rhyme, but it is a deep insight into life, a profound understanding of life, and a song that starts from the heart and triggers strong empathy. And AI's "creation" can only be the archaeological excavation of sound archives, and the drumbeat seems to be that drumbeat, but it is difficult to strike on people's hearts. When I sang "I hope you can still be by my side fifty years from now" in "Fifty Years Later", behind this simple and straightforward lyrics is a unique understanding of family and time, and this cultural code cannot be deciphered by algorithms. In fact, our cultural genes have formed an aesthetic subconscious that human creators may not even be aware of, which is the "aesthetic habit" engraved in the bone marrow of national culture. In this era where algorithms are increasingly permeating the field of art, the greatest advantage of human creators lies precisely in having painful memories, feeling the fading of love, and being able to appreciate the genuine understanding of death. It is precisely these that give our artistic creation depth and warmth. What truly touches people's hearts is not the perfection of skills, but the authenticity of the soul. In this sense, the inability of AI to write the song of the soul is not a failure of technology, but a proof that humanity still possesses humanity. So, how can we make our ethnic music go beyond the region and reach the whole country and even the world? The works that touch people's hearts in art history often arise from the close connection between creators and the times, and are also a gaze on the world from a local perspective. Beethoven composed the Ninth Symphony after becoming deaf, which is the ultimate hymn to human ideals. The Indian masterpiece "The Last of the Mohicans" sings about the vicissitudes and vastness of life, making you instantly want to understand this nation; There is also the famous band Henghatu from the Tuva Republic of the Russian Federation, who introduced traditional hula art to the world. The technique of "throat singing" has shocked audiences worldwide, conveying the harmony between humans and nature and the metaphor of animism in music. We have the Yellow River Cantata - the song of the people's resistance against Japan, which is a unique narrative of national history and has been passed down from generation to generation as a classic. These groundbreaking works have not only been passed down, but also endowed with distinct characteristics of the times, achieving cross-cultural dissemination. At present, we cannot be confined to the imperfect vibrato produced by fission in the original ecology of life. We should also learn to use advanced technology to make it more contagious. I also try to express ethnic music beyond my age, such as the ancient "Kouxian" from the Yi ethnic region, in a modern way. I also hope that ethnic elements can be repackaged by advanced technology and become the voice of Chinese music going global. While safeguarding the irreplaceable value of human creativity, we should not completely deny the auxiliary functions of AI music - it can become an efficient tool for human creators to help complete repetitive tasks such as arrangement and harmony. But the soul of creation must come from flesh and blood life experiences. As Dutch cultural theorist Joss de Muir pointed out, the true art of the digital age is not about confronting technology, but about finding a new balance between technology and humanities. Perhaps the most ideal creative model for the future is to have AI handle the technical aspects of music, while humans are responsible for providing insights into life that only flesh and blood can produce.
