The launch ceremony of the "China Russia Joint Marine Scientific Expedition" was held on the 22nd in the Russian Far East port city of Vladivostok. Researchers from both countries will depart on the Russian research vessel "Academician Lavrentiyev" on the 23rd to conduct scientific research activities in the Bering Sea and the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Wang Jun, Acting Consul General of China in Vladivostok, delivered a speech at the launch ceremony, stating that since the first joint scientific expedition between Chinese and Russian marine scientists 15 years ago, they have worked together to overcome multiple scientific challenges and established deep mutual trust and friendship. The establishment of the "China Russia Joint Research Center for Oceans and Climate" in 2017 has further institutionalized and normalized cooperation between the two countries. This joint scientific expedition focuses on paleoceanography, paleoclimatology, and ecosystem research. The relevant achievements will help humans gain a deeper understanding of the climate evolution laws in the North Pacific Arctic region and provide key scientific basis for predicting future environmental changes. Against the backdrop of deepening economic globalization and regional integration, the restart of the joint scientific expedition between China and Russia demonstrates the joint responsibility of the two countries in addressing global climate change and exploring cutting-edge fields of marine science, marking a new journey in marine scientific research cooperation between the two countries. Dennis Makarov, director of the Institute of Pacific Oceanography of the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said at the launching ceremony that the scientific expedition was jointly conducted by the Institute of Pacific Oceanography of the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the First Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China. It was the first time that the two sides resumed joint scientific expedition after the COVID-19 epidemic, and it was of great significance. The results of this scientific expedition are helpful in reconstructing the historical evolution of the ocean and climate, and are of great significance for predicting the impact of current and future climate change on regional marine ecology, fisheries, and transportation. According to Zou Jianjun, the chief scientist and geologist of China in this scientific expedition, a total of 25 researchers from China and Russia participated in the joint scientific expedition from the Bering Sea to the Northwest Pacific, including 5 from China. Researchers from both countries plan to conduct a comprehensive environmental survey of the Bering Sea and typical waters in the northwest Pacific Ocean, investigating the response process and feedback mechanism of the late Quaternary Bering Sea Northwest Pacific to global climate change.
