Brazilian Sinologist Shen Youyou: Exploring the 'Chinese Room' in the Spiritual World
2025-07-23
On the 21st local time, in the distant Brazil, a new book translated from the Chinese writer Lu Xun's work "Scream" was released in bookstores of all sizes. The translator is Brazilian sinologist George Sinedino, who prefers to be referred to by his Chinese name: Shen Youyou. Divided into two hemispheres, separated by thousands of miles, so far yet so close. Due to a special fate, Shen Youyou crossed mountains and seas to China and settled in Macau, constantly telling Chinese stories to the Portuguese speaking world with his pen. Brazilian sinologist Shen Youyou will attend an international academic symposium in Beijing in October 2024. In the early 1980s, when I was four or five years old, my hometown Natal opened its first Chinese restaurant, which my family loved and often went to. ”Shen Youyou said that this is the earliest Chinese cultural symbol he came into contact with. At that time, East Asian culture had already formed a certain spread and influence in Brazil, where there were Chinese books translated from other languages, popular martial arts films by Bruce Lee, and taste buds stimulated by delicious Chinese food, but mostly through intuitive and superficial contact. Shen Youyou described himself as having a "natural curiosity" about the cultures of other countries. After graduating from university, he came from his hometown in northeastern Brazil to the capital Brasilia to engage in diplomatic work. In 2004, by chance, Shen Youyou met Hu Xudong, an associate professor at Peking University who was visiting Brazil, which brought him a pleasant surprise as he struggled to learn Chinese systematically. I went to the place where Mr. Hu lived with other students to attend classes, and we studied for about 10 months. We learned very quickly. ”Shortly thereafter, Shen Youyou participated in an experiential course organized by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Latin America and the Caribbean. Over a two-week period, he visited Beijing, Gansu, Shanghai, and Fujian. Recalling that experience, Shen Youyou said, "Living China is so vast, with many interesting customs." He compared the cultures of various regions in China to colorful mosaics, each with its own personality but not separated from a main axis. After obtaining the highest level of the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), Shen Youyou began pursuing a master's degree at Peking University and graduated in 2012. He said, "Since I got my Chinese name, I seem to have been reborn in a completely new cultural context and started growing rapidly." Brazilian sinologist Shen Youyou gave a lecture at Beijing Foreign Studies University in 2024. Not long ago, the 18th China Book Special Contribution Award was announced in Beijing, and Shen Youyou was one of the 16 winners. From being a student of Chinese culture to translating Chinese works into Portuguese speaking countries, he sees this as a 'natural' process. One of the original intentions of the translation was to introduce China to our Brazilian compatriots. ”Shen Youyou said that the Chinese cultural literature he read when he was a child was not ideal, and the translator was obviously not familiar with Chinese culture. He hopes to provide Brazilians who have never had the opportunity to come to distant China in their lifetime with a deeper introduction beyond media portrayal through his works. Since the first translation of "The Analects: Interpretation of Portuguese Language", Shen Youyou's translation journey has gone through more than ten years, and almost all of the works he chooses to translate are ancient Chinese cultural classics. Most Brazilians live in the present and do not value the past. However, I believe that ancient thought is closely related to modern life, and it has important reference value and significance for modern people. In his opinion, the term "philosophy" cannot summarize ancient Chinese thought, because the latter "goes far beyond the scope of philosophy, is rooted in Chinese history and culture, with ethics and morality as the core, and at the deepest level is the exploration of life, the universe, and nature. Among existing works, the new work "Scream Performance - Shen's Dramatic Translation and Literary Analysis" appears very unique, reflecting a new possibility for Shen Youyou's book selection. Lu Xun is humorous and satirical, and Brazilians like characters with personality. ”He said that in the past, he paid more attention to ancient Chinese classics, and later realized that although the works during the New Culture Movement reflected a very strong criticism, it was a conscious criticism of Chinese people's own limitations, which was very valuable. Brazilian sinologist Shen Youyou will attend a seminar at the Communication University of China in 2024. After graduating with a master's degree from Xinhua News Agency, the world map once again unfolded in front of Shen Youyou: go to the United States to pursue a PhD, or return to work in your home country? In the end, fate brought him back together with a Beijing girl he met while studying Chinese in Brazil. After marriage, he settled in Macau, China with his wife. The location of Macau in history is very interesting, and it has played a very important role in the two-way communication between China and Europe. ”Shen Youyou said that after returning to the motherland, Macau has also been exploring how to do a good job in building a bridge between Eastern and Western cultures. He believes that with the advantage of the "One Country, Two Systems" system, Macao can do a lot of work to promote cultural globalization. By producing and exporting cultural products, people can realize that Chinese culture is one of the comprehensive qualities that everyone should possess, "just like there must be a" Chinese room "in people's spiritual world. Having been in China for 20 years, Shen Youyou obtained a doctoral degree and established a family and career. He currently teaches at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Macau. He said he is Brazilian and also a resident of Macau, fully adapted to the Chinese cultural environment, and plans to continue staying here in the future. Next year is the China Pakistan Cultural Year, and Shen Youyou will also welcome the publication of two new translations, "The Art of War by Sun Tzu" and "Introduction to Qing Dynasty Academic Studies". When asked about the significance of his work, Shen Youyou hopes to contribute to the internationalization of Chinese culture and also hopes for a better atmosphere of Sinology in Brazil. Multiculturalism is China's best calling card. ”He said that the world has undergone great changes, and China is very important to Brazil now. For such a partner, it is not enough to only know the surface. We should seize the opportunity to get to know and understand each other. (New Society)
