Beijing Baita Temple East West Fork: Symphony of Ancient and Modern Times Between Green Bricks and Gray Tiles
2025-07-16
On the evening of July 12th, at the central square of Gongmenkou East West Branch in Xicheng District, Beijing, with the command of "open the street", cold fireworks rose into the sky, creating a brilliant arc of light in the night sky. The White Pagoda of Miaoying Temple is draped with a soft "snow mountain white" halo under the illumination of lights, interweaving with over 200 red lanterns to create warm light and shadow, outlining the unique X-shaped outline of the alley. The swirling of pigeon whistles, the buzzing of diabolos, and the long cries of old Beijing's vendors interweave like a symphony of sounds that travel through time and space, immersing the on-site tourists in the most vibrant fireworks of this city. This White Pagoda, which was first built in the Yuan Dynasty, has stood quietly for more than 700 years, and Miaoying Temple is also named White Pagoda Temple because of it. However, the east-west branching alley adjacent to its palace entrance has undergone a transformative transformation in the past decade. From the once chaotic and cramped streets to the current "most beautiful streets and alleys in Beijing", the "rejuvenation" of this alley is a story about history, people's livelihoods, and the future. In 2015, Xicheng District launched a protective renewal of the Baita Temple area, innovatively adopting a model of "government guidance, enterprise implementation, overall planning, and overall operation" to solve the problem of old city renewal through mechanisms such as "application based rent exchange" and "whole courtyard application based rent termination". The housing conditions of 1230 households have been improved, and 37000 square meters of usable space have been released. 143 buildings have been upgraded in style, 3800 meters of power lines have been installed underground, and 6552 square meters of road landscape have been renovated, completely eliminating the "spider webs in the air" that were once densely covered with power lines. The texture of the alleys with green bricks and gray tiles has been revitalized. In January of this year, the Baita Temple East West Branch Demonstration Block completed the renovation of the central area's style. Strolling through it, the prominent "Dongcha" and "Xicha" plaques and copper area guide silently tell the story of historical inheritance, while the urban renewal display screen embedded in the wall scrolls and plays the butterfly transformation process of this alley. Transformation is not only the renewal of physical space, but also the rebirth of business formats and culture. Xicheng District aims to create a "Beijing leisure and cultural check-in place, and a supporting service carrier for the financial street", promoting the development of the district towards the integration of culture, business and tourism. Nowadays, there are both the hustle and bustle of old Beijing and the fashionable atmosphere of modern cities. The high standard introduction of diverse business formats has attracted one Beijing first store and ten Xicheng first stores to settle in. In June of this year, the White Pagoda Art Center and the White Pagoda Love Culture Center opened successively, becoming gathering places for art enthusiasts. The irregularly held cultural exhibitions and immersive experiences allow visitors to experience the collision of tradition and modernity deep in the alley, while the White Pagoda lighting project makes this ancient pagoda a visual focal point of both day and night scenery. When night falls, the tower is adorned with golden borders, complementing the lights in the alley. Nowadays, the east-west fork at the entrance of the palace has become a 'living museum'. Tourists can take photos of the sunset with golden borders on the white tower on the terrace, raise their glasses in the bar and gaze at the tower under the lights, or taste innovative fusion cuisine in the specialty restaurant. This place has both a rich historical heritage and the vitality of urban renewal, and has successively won honors such as "Best Practice of Beijing Urban Renewal", "Top Ten Excellent Practice Projects for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Cities in Xicheng District", and "Beijing Municipal Characteristic Consumer Block". Old resident Zhang likes to sit on the benches in the central square the most, listening to the laughter of children playing and echoing in the alley. When tourists asked for directions, the old man enthusiastically acted as a guide: "Dongcha had the best view of the White Tower, and the second floor of the restaurant in Xicha could take a panoramic view..." At the beginning of the lights, the mellow smell of coffee in the alley and the smoke of fried sauce noodles mingled in the air, and tourists' laughter and residents' greetings became a new market symphony. This decade long transformation not only reshaped the texture of the alleys with green bricks and gray tiles, but also allowed the historical context to continue to dance in contemporary life. As engraved on the newly erected copper guide board: "Observe the White Pagoda in the east-west fork, and read the past and present in the depths of the alley
