Li Yonghong, a villager from Quefeng Village, Maojun Town, Lanshan County, Yongzhou City, Hunan Province, has always remembered his father's dying words: "There is a medical book wrapped in cloth at home, handwritten by a Red Army soldier. You must keep it well. Last summer, Li Yonghong donated his long cherished medical books to the Hunan Revolutionary Military Museum. This medical book, bound with black cotton thread, has a total of 158 pages. Despite the vicissitudes of time, it is still well preserved. On the yellowed pages of the book, the traditional Chinese calligraphy with vertical strokes is clear and recognizable, neatly recording the treatment prescriptions for more than 30 common diseases such as typhoid fever, heatstroke, dampness, stroke, wind pain, cough, and asthma. This medical book, which is filled with the hard work of Red Army soldiers, reveals the history of the Red Army's Long March through the Blue Mountains and witnesses the military and civilian situation during the Long March. During the Long March of the Red Army from 1934 to 1935, multiple troops passed through Lanshan County. Along the way, the Red Army had to break through the encirclement and blockade of the Nationalist Army on the one hand, and maintain a high-intensity rapid movement on the other hand. In extremely harsh combat environments, the number of wounded and sick Red Army soldiers increased sharply. At that time, a Red Army soldier named "Xiao Xiao" was unable to continue accompanying the army due to severe injuries. Local villager Li Fanru (Li Yonghong's great grandfather) risked his life to secretly treat him at home, using Chinese herbal medicine to heal his injuries. Li Fanru was born in 1897. During his early travels in Yunnan, he studied at a traditional Chinese medicine clinic and returned to his hometown to practice medicine and help the world. He hid it in his attic and used a fake wall to block the entrance. About a week later, the troops withdrew, and due to minor injuries that had not yet healed, the leading cadre decided to let him continue to stay at the Li family for treatment. During the treatment and recovery period, Xiaoyu formed a deep friendship with Li Fanru. During a long conversation, Li Fanru lamented that his cultural level is limited, and many precious prescriptions may be lost. Less than I heard, I proactively suggested that I could help record the prescription and organize it into a book. In this way, a special cultural inheritance unfolded in the attic of the Li family: Li Fanru orally recited the contents of the prescriptions one by one, and carefully recorded them with a brush if they were smaller. After more than half a month of effort, a handwritten medical book was successfully completed. Under the careful care of Li Fanru's family, the Red Army soldier Xiao quickly recovered his health. This medical book was originally organized by Xiao Xiao to thank the Li family. When parting, Xiao Xiao insisted on leaving the completed medical book to Li Fanru, hoping that this medical book, which condensed numerous medical experiences, could relieve the pain of more villagers. In order to protect this handwritten medical book and inherit the red spirit, Li Fanru and his descendants will regard it as an important relic and entrust it to future generations for safekeeping. Nowadays, this handwritten medical book by Red Army soldiers is collected by the Hunan Revolutionary Military Museum. Li Yonghong hopes to use this medical book as a carrier to tell the story of the deep bond between the military and civilians during the Red Army period, so that the spirit of the Long March can be passed down from generation to generation and become a powerful spiritual force that inspires people to strive forward.
