Telling wonderful Chinese stories to Arab readers

2025-07-03

I have a deep connection with China, "said Furong, a Tunisian sinologist, translator, and publisher who won the 18th Special Contribution Award for Chinese Books. Furong's face was filled with pride." After graduating from high school, I chose to study Chinese with the encouragement and expectations of my father. My father had great vision at that time and was very optimistic about China's future development. I followed my father's advice and officially started learning Chinese in 1999. "Since then, Furong has become increasingly fond of Chinese culture. I am trying to cross the language barrier, uncover the mysterious veil of this ancient country of China, and perceive its long and splendid civilization. "After obtaining her first doctoral degree in Egypt, Furong came to China and obtained her second doctoral degree from Beijing Language and Culture University. In China, she formed deep friendships with her friends and spent unforgettable 6 years together. In 2014, Furong left Beijing and returned to China to live. She works as a Chinese teacher at Carthage University in Tunisia, telling students about China's history, culture, and local customs. I found that bookstores in Tunisia rarely sell books related to China. Through communication with readers, I have learned that they are actually very interested in Chinese books, but due to language barriers and other factors, the book market in China has not grown. ”Furong said, "I feel that my Chinese is pretty good, so I came up with an idea: to promote Chinese books and spread Chinese culture in Tunisia through my own actions." In 2016, Furong co founded the Tunisian Oriental Knowledge Publishing House with her husband, mainly dedicated to translating Chinese books and telling wonderful Chinese stories to readers in Tunisia and other Arab countries. Over the course of 9 years, we have introduced and translated more than 80 Chinese books, covering topics such as economics, politics, culture, history, and society. Among these translations, books such as "Zheng He and Africa", "Chinese Road and Chinese Principles", "A History of the Forbidden City", and "Solving the Ten Major Problems of China's Economy" are well-known. We have also exhibited a variety of excellent works at various international book fairs in Arab countries, which have been well received by local readers. ”Furong smiled and said. Turning to her publishing experience, Furong said: "We will find out which categories of Chinese works are more interesting to local readers through exchanges, market research and other ways. Then, we will try to select more well-known authors and influential and representative works in the field. At the same time, we will also pay attention to whether these works can vividly show the true style of Chinese society and the life and thoughts of the Chinese people." In April this year, the 39th Tunis International Book Fair was held, and China is the guest of honor. Readers' enthusiasm for China and their love for Chinese stories exceed our imagination. They know that China has a long history and civilization, and they also want to understand the secrets of the rapid economic and social development of contemporary China. Many readers are looking forward to coming to China in the near future to see and take a walk, "said Furong." This inspires us to make translation and publishing work more solid When it comes to future translation and publishing plans, Furong said, "Nowadays, there are more and more people learning Chinese in Tunisia. Some of them want to have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, while others want to do business in China and need more professional Chinese textbooks. I hope to publish a series of high-quality Chinese textbooks while continuing to translate excellent Chinese literary works. With books as a bridge, we can promote mutual learning among civilizations and promote people to people communication
