Rare new blood type, with only one carrier being 'Gwada negative'

According to a recent report on the website of France's 24 television station, French blood institutions have discovered a globally rare new blood type - "Guada negative". This discovery has been officially certified by the International Society of Blood Transfusion. The only known carrier of this blood type is a 68 year old French woman from the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. According to researchers, this discovery originated from a routine physical examination 15 years ago. At the time of the preoperative examination, the woman's blood tested for a special antibody, but due to technical limitations, further investigation was not possible. With the breakthrough of high-throughput DNA sequencing technology, researchers have finally discovered unique gene mutations in its body, unraveling this long-standing mystery. Project leader Thierry Perrard explained that the formation of this blood type requires both parents to carry specific genetic mutations, and children must inherit both parents' mutated genes at the same time. This woman just meets this special condition, while her brother and sister do not show the blood type characteristics because they only inherit the unilateral mutation gene. Since the discovery of the ABO blood type system in the early 20th century, with the rapid development of DNA sequencing technology, the process of discovering new blood types has significantly accelerated. As of now, the International Blood Transfusion Association has confirmed 48 blood type systems. Researchers point out that the discovery of new blood types has multiple meanings: it can not only improve the diagnosis and treatment level of rare blood type patients, but also provide new research directions for fields such as oncology, neurology, and rheumatology. At present, they are conducting specialized screening among blood donors in Guadeloupe, hoping to find more people carrying this special blood type. (New Society)
