JAS-39E fighter jet equipped with artificial intelligence. Recently, Saab Group in Sweden announced that the JAS-39E fighter jet equipped with an artificial intelligence (AI) system has completed three test flights in Swedish civilian airspace. This round of test flights is an important part of the "Beyond Project", which is funded by the Swedish Defense Materials Management Agency and aims to explore the potential application of AI technology in the field of air combat. The test flight will be conducted from May 28th to June 3rd. In the third test flight on June 3rd, the JAS-39E equipped with the "Centaurus" AI system conducted a beyond visual range air combat exercise with a JAS-39D fighter jet, and the early warning aircraft provided target data and command and control support for both sides. In dynamic air combat scenarios, JAS-39E collects real-time data through onboard sensors, and the AI system autonomously completes complex maneuvers and sends missile launch prompts to test pilots. Simulation confrontation shows that the performance of AI systems is comparable to that of human pilots. The 'Beyond Project' is a sub project of Sweden's' Future Fighter System ', which was launched in January 2024 and entered the system integration phase in March of the same year. In this round of test flights, the AI system reached a level equivalent to about 50 years of flying experience for human pilots in just a few hours. The follow-up plan for the project includes adversarial exercises with two JAS-39Es and two JAS-39Ds to further validate system performance. (New Society)
