From June 9th to 11th, a seminar on meteorological services for the protection of grotto temples with the theme of "Meteorological Empowerment of Cultural Relics Protection and Guarding of Chinese Civilization Treasures" was held in Dunhuang, Gansu Province. The conference aims to promote the establishment of a domestic exchange mechanism for meteorological services for the protection of grotto temples, explore new measures and ideas for meteorological services for the protection of grotto temples, strengthen the supply of meteorological tourism resources and cultural relics protection meteorological services. The seminar, jointly organized by the Gansu Provincial Meteorological Bureau, Gansu Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau, and Dunhuang Research Institute, conducted in-depth exchanges on the impact and adaptation of climate and cultural heritage, climate change on cultural relics and cultural heritage protection, as well as scientific research achievements in cultural relics protection and meteorological impact. It explored the progress and achievements of meteorological monitoring, forecasting and early warning services for the preventive protection of cultural relics, cultural relics meteorological risk forecasting and early warning, cultural relics lightning disaster prevention, and cooperation between cultural relics and meteorological departments, with a focus on grotto temples. During the conference, invited presentations were given by the National Climate Center, Gansu Provincial Meteorological Bureau, Shanxi Provincial Meteorological Bureau, Dunhuang Academy, Longmen Grottoes Academy, Yungang Grottoes Academy, and Maijishan Grottoes Art Research Institute, providing reliable scientific basis for a comprehensive understanding of the forefront progress of cultural relic protection and the current situation and demand for meteorological services. The Shanxi Provincial Meteorological Bureau, Henan Provincial Meteorological Bureau, and Gansu Provincial Meteorological Bureau respectively exchanged and discussed issues related to cultural relic protection meteorological services, ecological barrier construction, as well as the impact of sudden heavy rainfall, high temperatures, sandstorms and other meteorological disasters on cultural relic protection and meteorological impact scientific research on caves, and the establishment of cultural heritage risk identification models. During this period, under the guidance of the China Meteorological Administration and the National Cutural Heritage Administration, the Meteorological Service Alliance for Cultural Relics Protection was established in Dunhuang under the leadership of the Gansu Provincial Meteorological Bureau, and jointly sponsored by the Shanxi Provincial Meteorological Bureau and Henan Provincial Meteorological Bureau. Gansu, which winds about 1600 kilometers from east to west, has a large number of grottoes, a large scale, rich content, high value, and unique features. As an advantage and characteristic of cultural relics resources in Gansu, caves from different eras have been preserved to varying degrees, forming a relatively complete history of Buddhist cave art, known as the "hometown of Chinese cave art". A few years ago, in order to make the environmental meteorological observation of the the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang, including the world cultural heritage, more accurate and "advanced", the meteorological department of Gansu Province built regional automatic meteorological stations in Mogao Grottoes, West Thousand Buddha Cave, Five Temple Grottoes and other places to carry out environmental meteorological observation and realize data sharing; In case of significant meteorological processes, timely weather forecast and warning information for Mogao Caves and other places will be provided to Dunhuang Academy, and preventive measures and suggestions will be proposed.
