Recently, the Ministry of Education announced the results of the registration and approval of undergraduate majors in ordinary colleges and universities for the year 2024. A total of 1839 new majors were added in universities across the country, 157 majors were adjusted in degree granting categories or study years, 2220 majors were suspended from enrollment, and 1428 majors were revoked. The efforts to adjust and optimize majors have been further strengthened. The Ministry of Education has simultaneously updated and released the "Undergraduate Major Catalog of Ordinary Higher Education Institutions (2025)", adding 29 new majors. The new directory includes 93 professional categories and 845 types of majors, further strengthening the rapid response of professional settings to national strategic needs and high-quality development. The 29 new majors added this time fully reflect the national strategy, market demand, and the driving force of technological development. In terms of serving national strategies, majors such as Regional Studies, Carbon Neutrality Science and Engineering, Marine Science and Technology, and Health and Medical Security have been added; Facing the forefront of technological development, majors such as intelligent molecular engineering, medical device and equipment engineering, and spatiotemporal information engineering have been added; Proactively adapting to market demand, we have added majors such as international cruise management and aviation sports. At the same time, we will focus on empowering economic and social development with artificial intelligence, and establish majors such as artificial intelligence education, intelligent audio-visual engineering, and digital drama. In order to respond more quickly to national strategies, the Ministry of Education has established for the first time a mechanism for setting up specialized programs that are urgently needed in strategic areas. For the latest deployment and highly concerned strategic areas by the central government, a "green channel" for timely response to relevant professional settings has been opened up. Targeting the rapid development needs of the low altitude economy, breaking through the centralized application restrictions, and guiding six universities including Beihang University to establish low altitude technology and engineering majors. At present, there are a total of 62800 undergraduate majors in universities across the country. The Ministry of Education will further strengthen the linkage between professional settings and employment work, guide universities to continuously adjust and optimize existing majors, strengthen the prediction and analysis of talent demand in various fields, and continuously enhance the fit between higher education and economic and social development.
