The construction of a large-scale scientific research facility for human cell lineages was launched in Guangzhou on the 25th, which will draw a dynamic evolution map of cells in the human life process, construct a digital cell AI model, and promote a new paradigm of biomedical research. This facility is a major national science and technology infrastructure during the "14th Five Year Plan" period. It is led by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health. It is located in Guangzhou International Biological Island, with a planned construction period of 4.5 years and a total construction area of more than 50000 square meters. Researchers explain that cells are the fundamental unit of life. The compilation and evolution of all cell types that appear throughout the entire process from fertilized egg to tissue and organ development, and then to aging, constitutes the "cell lineage". Analyzing cell lineages is hailed as the "key" to revealing the mysteries of life development and evolution, and manipulating life activities. The facility will focus on innovative technologies and device development such as sample preservation storage, spatial multi omics, and advanced imaging, integrating cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence to create a dynamic cell map covering three dimensions: development, disease, and aging. This is like writing a detailed 'cellular genealogy' for life, allowing scientists and even the public to clearly track the 'past and present lives' of each cell Sun Fei, Vice President of Guangzhou Health Center, Commander in Chief and Chief Engineer of Cell Lineage Facilities, stated. Researchers have introduced that the current global research and development of innovative drugs is time-consuming and costly, but the clinical success rate is low, partly due to the fact that drug development is mainly carried out in animal models, which cannot accurately simulate human physiological system responses. In the future, cell lineage facilities are expected to create a "digital patient" using patient cell information, simulate the therapeutic effects of different treatment methods in the body, and achieve "tailor-made" precision treatment. Chen Jiekai, a researcher at Guangzhou Health Center and deputy commander-in-chief and chief process engineer of the Cell Lineage Facility, stated that the construction of this facility will produce a number of innovative technological achievements and products in life science instruments, reagents, software, and data. It will further strengthen the integration of AI and data resources, carry out deep cooperation with leading enterprises, and accelerate the transformation of scientific research achievements into clinical applications.
