Norwegian Ambassador to China: Innovative practices happening in China can benefit everyone

2025-03-24

The innovative practices that occur in China can benefit everyone, "said Norwegian Ambassador to China Dai Weien in his keynote speech on green and low-carbon transformation in Beijing on the 20th. Dai Weien attended the "Ambassadors' Forum" activity of the regional country forum hosted by Chongyang Institute of Finance, Renmin University of China, and pointed out that carbon emissions trading is one of the important areas of cooperation between Norway and China. At present, China has established the world's largest carbon emissions trading market, covering over 40% of the country's annual carbon dioxide emissions. It can be said that China's carbon emissions trading system may become the most important climate change mitigation measure in the world, "said Dai Weien, who became Norway's ambassador to China in August last year. For him, the rapid development of China's transportation electrification also left a deep impression. Dai Weien stated that China's high-speed rail not only facilitates efficient travel for people, but also has lower carbon emissions compared to airplanes. This is a great example of mobilizing capital for investment, which can be part of the solutions needed to build a carbon neutral society. "The World Meteorological Organization confirmed in January this year that 2024 was the hottest year on record. In Dai Weien's view, climate change has already affected weather patterns in every region of the world, and "every country must take action to involve businesses, consumers, and others." In 2024, China and Norway agreed to establish a dialogue on green transformation between the two countries. Dai Weien stated that during his several months working in China, he has witnessed Norwegian green technology companies settling in Zhuhai, China. In the end, it still depends on what specific achievements we have made, and what universities and enterprises of the two countries have achieved through exchanges and cooperation. Norway has set a goal of becoming a "low emission society" by 2050, and China is also striving to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. Dai Weien said that although there are still decades left until 2050 and 2060, many decisions made now will still have an impact at that time, just as many buildings and infrastructure built now still exist. I hope that by then, when we look back on the past, we can say that we made good decisions and helped the world become a low emission world
