Recently, the Ministry of Education and the National Health Commission jointly issued a notice on strengthening the construction of medical and elderly care and management majors in higher vocational education, deploying the strengthening of the construction of medical and elderly care and management majors, accelerating the cultivation of professional talents combining medical and elderly care, and better meeting the multi-level and diversified health and elderly care needs of the elderly. The notice points out that it is necessary to guide and support local vocational undergraduate schools and other institutions to establish undergraduate majors in medical and nursing care and management, and to encourage graduates of vocational and technical majors such as health management, elderly care and management, and smart health elderly care services and management to apply. Encourage schools with conditions to explore a comprehensive training model for medical, nursing, care, and management majors between middle and high schools. The notice requires that higher vocational schools should be guided to closely connect with the development needs of regional medical and elderly care integration, and based on the supply and demand of talents and the actual operation of the school, do a good job in demonstrating and planning the establishment of medical and elderly care and management majors. Encourage ordinary undergraduate universities and higher vocational schools to establish professional assistance mechanisms, guide the pairing of advantageous majors in medicine and health and medical care and management majors, and promote joint construction and sharing. The notice also proposes that all regions should guide schools to collaborate with medical and elderly care institutions, comprehensive hospitals specializing in geriatric medicine, grassroots medical and health institutions, as well as specialized geriatric hospitals, rehabilitation hospitals, nursing homes (centers, stations) and other relevant institutions to jointly develop talent training programs for medical and elderly care and management. Emphasis should be placed on the close integration of theory and practice, and the principle of practical teaching hours should not be less than 50%. In addition to practical courses, students are supported to intern and train at relevant medical and health service institutions to enhance their practical skills and employment abilities in real environments. It is reported that 10 provinces (regions, cities) including Beijing, Heilongjiang, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong, and Guangdong are key provinces for the construction of medical and nursing care and management majors. By the end of 2027, in principle, each key province should add no less than 3 new medical and nursing care and management professional sites, driving the overall improvement of the national medical and nursing care and management professional construction level.
