AI is stirring up the PC market trend
2025-03-17
Recently, with the acceleration of AI big models and the continuous improvement of chip technology, the development of AI PCs (artificial intelligence personal computers) has shown an accelerating trend. The industry believes that with the combination of replacement demand and national subsidy incentives, AI PCs are expected to usher in a wave of sales boom. At the same time, the focus of industry competition will shift from improving hardware performance to competing in ecological capabilities, and the market landscape may usher in a new round of reshuffle. Multiple manufacturers have recently released their own AI PC products to meet consumers' demand for intelligent and efficient PCs. At the recently held 2025 Mobile World Congress, Lenovo showcased a ThinkBook Flip AI PC concept phone that supports five different usage modes: notebook, portrait, sharing, tablet, and reading. It can flexibly adapt to different scenarios such as office, collaboration, and entertainment according to needs. In addition, one of its core highlights is its AI driven multitasking capability - through split screen functionality, users can run multiple applications simultaneously and reduce dependence on external displays. In addition to the concept machine, Lenovo previously launched the YOGA AI PC Yuanqi series of new products on February 25th. Its Tianxi personal intelligent agent system integrates the DeepSeek end-to-end large model, allowing users to summarize, translate, and write documents on the computer without calling the cloud based large model, becoming the world's first AI terminal brand to deploy and run DeepSeek large models on the AI PC side. Not only Lenovo, but also many domestic manufacturers have rushed to launch their own AI PC products. On February 26th, Honor officially released its AI PC 2.0 strategy and launched the Honor MagicBook Pro 14, which is equipped with the latest AI capabilities. In four major application scenarios of search, reading, creation, and note taking, this laptop can support AI functions such as intelligent search, privacy screen mirroring, voiceprint noise reduction, and Honor Note taking. Subsequently, Xiaomi also launched the REDMI Book Pro 2025 series on February 27th, attempting to achieve synergy between hardware computing power and scenarios through the advantages of the ecosystem. According to Xiaomi, this device has features such as AI video content search and AI document processing, allowing users to search for content using voice commands. It also supports Xiaomi's ecosystem and seamlessly connects with Apple devices. Apple, unwilling to fall behind, also unveiled MacBook Air and Mac Studio equipped with M4 chips on the evening of March 5th, which have improved in computing speed and neural network engine AI task processing. The industry believes that the reason why PC giants are so tirelessly promoting AI PCs is, on the one hand, that they have seen the revolutionary upgrade of CPUs, providing powerful technical support for AI PCs; On the other hand, we hope to enhance product competitiveness through the deep integration of AI technology. It is understood that the concept of AI PC was first proposed by Intel in September 2023. Simply put, an AI PC refers to an intelligent computer equipped with a neural processing unit (NPU) that can efficiently process AI tasks locally without relying on cloud computing power. Currently, AI has become an important driving force for the growth of PCs and laptops. According to data released by market analysis firm Canalys, the shipment volume of AI PCs in the Chinese market will steadily increase in 2024, reaching 5.8 million units, accounting for 15% of the total PC shipment volume. Canalys believes that this trend will accelerate by 2025, with AI PCs expected to account for 34% of PC shipments in the entire Greater China region. Another consulting firm, Gartner, is even more optimistic, predicting that the penetration rate of AI PCs will surge by 165% year-on-year in 2025, and by 2027, this proportion is expected to climb to 81%. Yang Yuanqing, Chairman and CEO of Lenovo Group, stated that due to the enhancement of computing power and model optimization, the progress speed of end-to-end artificial intelligence will show an exponential leap. The combined effect of these two advancements is expected to achieve a threefold overall performance improvement in the next 12 months. However, some industry insiders believe that although AI PCs have brought new vitality and opportunities to the highly homogenized PC market, the lack of "phenomenal applications" currently makes local AI functions difficult to achieve success. Although the AI intelligent assistants provided by manufacturers can support voice interaction and other functions, I feel that cloud based models such as Deepseek and Doubao are still more powerful, and these models can be directly installed and used on computers Consumers who have experienced AI PCs told reporters from Economic Reference Daily. A salesperson from a computer store also told reporters that "gamers or professional users who need to design, render, and edit value the processor, memory, graphics card, battery, and other configurations of the computer more, while ordinary users consider cost-effectiveness. Few consumers pay for the AI function of the computer." Xu Yue, a senior analyst at IDC China, believes that in the future, the competition of AI PCs will be jointly dominated by hardware and software. Hardware provides performance foundation and innovation driving force, while software achieves the improvement of functions and user experience. Only by the coordinated development of hardware and software, and building a strong ecosystem, can AI PCs succeed in the market. The industry may face a new round of reshuffling. Obviously, with the improvement of NPU performance and the popularization of open source models, AI PCs will cover more user scenarios in the future, and the focus of competition among manufacturers will shift from improving hardware performance to competing in ecological capabilities. So, we see that several major computer manufacturers are accelerating the localization deployment of AI models. For example, Lenovo upgraded its Tianxi AS system by deploying the DeepSeek big model on the client-side. Currently, it has integrated over 1700 AI applications, covering vertical fields such as healthcare (such as electronic medical record analysis), law (contract clause review), and education (personalized learning plan generation); Honor has chosen to provide AI services through the collaboration of end-to-end multimodal models, big language models, and cloud based hundred model ecosystems. It has launched evolved tuning technology and YOYO Assistant 2.0, and has initially built an AI native application ecosystem for creative, office, gaming, and other scenarios. The industry believes that AI PCs are reshaping the PC industry through breakthroughs in end-to-end computing power, interactive intelligence, and ecological interconnection, and the market landscape may usher in a new round of reshuffle. Canalys analyst Xu Ying said that for PC manufacturers, as AI models become increasingly efficient and the ecosystem including AI assistants and agents gradually matures, those who develop AI agents and platforms first will have a first mover advantage in seizing market share. Whoever can establish the AI PC ecosystem first will be able to master the entrance to the next generation of computing platforms. Xu Yue believes that "emerging enterprises have the opportunity to break the existing market pattern through technological innovation, scene adaptation, and localization strategies, but they need to overcome the scale advantages and technological barriers of traditional manufacturers." In his view, the new round of reshuffle is more likely to be presented in a "gradual change" manner rather than a comprehensive disruption. In the future, the market may form a diversified competitive situation where traditional giants dominate the high-end and new forces compete for segmented fields, In addition, it is worth noting that this year's government work report first mentioned "artificial intelligence computers", explicitly stating "supporting the widespread application of large models, vigorously developing new generation intelligent terminals such as intelligent connected new energy vehicles, artificial intelligence smartphones and computers, intelligent robots, and intelligent manufacturing equipment." This statement undoubtedly increases market expectations for the AI PC industry. (New Society)
