Chinese scientists have successfully constructed the highest level superconducting quantum computer currently available - the 105 bit superconducting quantum computing prototype "Zuchong No.3", once again breaking the world record for the superiority of superconducting quantum computing systems.
The reporter learned from the University of Science and Technology of China that recently, Pan Jianwei, Zhu Xiaobo, Peng Chengzhi and others from the university successfully built the "Zuchongzhi III", which can handle the problem of "quantum random circuit sampling" at a speed tens of billions of times faster than the fastest supercomputer currently in the world.
On March 3rd, the internationally renowned academic journal Physical Review Letters published this achievement, and the reviewers believed that it "constructed the highest level of superconducting quantum computer currently available".
Quantum computing is considered a key technology for the next generation of information revolution. The superiority of quantum computing is like a threshold, verifying the feasibility of quantum computing surpassing traditional computers. It is a prerequisite for quantum computing to have practical value and a reflection of a country's research strength in quantum computing.
Zuchong No. 3 contains 105 readable bits and 182 coupled bits, significantly improving multiple key performance indicators.
After testing, "Zuchong No. 3" completed 83 bit 32 layer random line sampling. Using the current best classical algorithm as a comparison standard, its computing speed is tens of billions of times faster than the fastest supercomputer currently available, and also millions of times faster than the latest result publicly announced by Google in October 2024. It is currently the strongest quantum computing superiority in the international superconducting system.
In 2019 and 2020, the United States and China successively launched quantum computing prototypes "Suzuki" and "Jiuzhang", achieving "quantum superiority", among which "Jiuzhang" uses the optical quantum technology route.
In 2021, the 66 bit superconducting quantum computing prototype "Zuchong-2" was successfully developed, making China the first country to achieve "quantum superiority" in both superconductivity and photonics technologies.
The mainstream view in the international academic community believes that the development of quantum computing needs to go through a "three-step process": the first step is to achieve the superiority of quantum computing; The second step is to develop a quantum simulator that can manipulate hundreds of qubits, solving problems that supercomputers cannot handle and have significant practical value; The third step is to significantly improve the manipulation accuracy, integration quantity, and fault tolerance of quantum bits, and develop a programmable universal quantum computer.
It is reported that the research team of "Zuchong No. 3" is accelerating exploration in various aspects such as quantum error correction, quantum entanglement, quantum simulation, and quantum chemistry.
