Ireland will replace old armored vehicles

2025-02-26

The Irish Armed Forces' Piranha armored vehicle. According to the Irish Mirror, Ireland plans to invest 400 million euros (approximately 418 million US dollars) to purchase about 100 armored vehicles to replace its aging fleet. At present, the Irish Armed Forces are equipped with 80 "piranha" armored vehicles and 27 RG-32 light tactical vehicles. Although the Irish Ministry of Defence has spent 68 million euros in recent years to upgrade the "Piranha" armored vehicle, the Irish Defence Force Council still believes it is necessary to replace the vehicle. The Irish Defence Force Council stated that sufficient armored personnel carriers are needed to meet overseas combat needs, while also providing support for domestic training of standing forces. To this end, Ireland has significantly increased its defense budget, with an 8% growth to 1.35 billion euros by 2025. It is reported that the models competing in this project may include the Swiss "Eagle" and "Piranha V" armored vehicles, the French "Serval" and VBCI armored vehicles, and the German "Boxer" armored vehicle. This procurement is part of the Irish military modernization upgrade plan, and Ireland also plans to increase its service personnel from 7400 to 11500 by 2028. (New Society)
