New Year's customs in New York showcase the charm of Spring Festival culture

2025-02-03

Happy New Year together, welcoming and seeing off all night long. New York is the city with the largest Chinese population in the United States and the location of the United Nations headquarters. The Spring Festival has already left the Chinese community here and become one of the popular public holidays among people from all walks of life in the area. The Spring Festival was established as a statutory holiday for public schools in New York City and New York State in June 2015 and September 2023, respectively. In December 2023, the 78th United Nations General Assembly also designated the Spring Festival as a United Nations holiday. For many years, landmarks such as Lincoln Center's New Year performance and the Empire State Building have lit up with "Chinese Red" and the Nasdaq Stock Exchange has rung the "New Year's Bell"... This American metropolis is forming a unique "New Year's custom" to celebrate the Spring Festival. New York's "Spring Colors Everywhere": Under the stage lights of the cross-border Spring Festival feast, a touch of green comes into view. The lingering melody of the qin and the clusters of green make local audiences feel as if they have traveled back to the Northern Song Dynasty, and together with the young painter Wang Ximeng, they experience a traditional Chinese cultural journey called "Thousand Miles of Mountains and Rivers". It was this dance drama "The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting" brought by China Oriental Performing Arts Group that opened the New York New Year celebration month of 2025. From January 10th to 12th, the play was performed four times in a row at the David Kirk Theater in Lincoln Center, which can accommodate over 2500 people, but tickets were still hard to come by. This year, folk artists from the Gongwang Palace Museum in Beijing have added a stronger New Year's flavor to the New York New Year event. With their help, local people have experienced rubbing the word "Fu", making lacquer fans, tying ropes, Paper Cuttings and other projects in many performing arts centers and cultural places, and given hand made small objects to family and friends as souvenirs. During the annual New Year celebration game held by the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA on the evening of January 27th, the festive atmosphere of the Spring Festival was reflected in the red envelopes placed on each seat, the "Chinese New Year" scroll bar on the scoreboard, and the occasional loud shouts of "Happy Spring Festival" from the host on site. Fans can also receive Snake Year handicrafts and taste Chinese cuisine that evening. On the evening of January 28th, at the top of the Empire State Building, which is about 443 meters high, there was still a "Chinese red" floating in the sky, like a bundle of red torches, spreading the festive and prosperous Spring Festival to all directions. This tradition has a history of 25 years and has become a symbol of cultural integration and friendship between China and the United States. As one of the oldest bands in the world, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra's Chinese Western fusion New Year concert has been held continuously for 13 years, making it the "finale" of the local New Year celebration series. This year's concert is scheduled to be held at Lincoln Center on February 11th. Classic works such as "Spring Festival Overture" and "Chinese Ethnic Dance Suite" will once again lead the audience through time and space, experiencing the beauty of music that transcends national borders. Traditional New Year's events such as Chinatown New Year float parades, dragon, lion, and fireworks festivals, and food temple fairs in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Flushing, Queens, have stood the test of time. The Manhattan Chinatown New Year Celebration, represented by the Cannon Culture Festival and float parade, has been held continuously for 26 years and has become a popular holiday comparable to the Thanksgiving Day Parade. James B. Helmowitz, the former president of the China America Association Press, who is committed to promoting exchanges between the United States and China, said: "If we can understand each other more deeply through cultural ties, I firmly believe that the hearts of the people of the United States and China will be more closely linked." A common talk about the "Legend of the Year of the Snake": the Chinese zodiac culture, bearing the idea of time and life philosophy, has taken root and sprouted in New York, the United States and the United Nations, not only narrowing the gap between the hearts of the people of the United States and China, but also becoming a model of cultural pluralism in the world. The United States Postal Service recently launched a 3D Snake zodiac commemorative stamp. The main color of green symbolizes vitality, and the red flowers embellishing the snake's body add a festive atmosphere. The red text "Lunar New Year" is written below the stamp. The United States Postal Service has been issuing zodiac commemorative stamps since 1993, which are widely popular among stamp collectors and the public. It is one of the most successful series of commemorative stamps in the history of the United States Postal Service. The stamp of the Year of the Snake issued by the United Nations Postal Administration features four intricately intertwined and end-to-end beautiful flower snakes, accompanied by prominent Chinese characters such as "Year of the Snake" and "Snake", which are exquisitely unique. This year's stamps also support personal customization, where people can use their personal pictures to replace the UN emblem pattern in the accompanying stamps, making the stamps more collectible. At the bell ringing ceremony for the Year of the Snake held on January 27th, Bob McCoy, Vice Chairman of Nasdaq, stated that this year is his zodiac year. In traditional Chinese culture, "snake" symbolizes good luck, wealth, and longevity. NASDAQ is proud to have listed over 250 Chinese companies on the exchange, and believes that these innovative and representative high-quality enterprises will help the better development of the United States and China. Blessing to the United Nations ":" There are so many people! I also participated in the event last year, and I think the scale has tripled this year. "On January 17th, at the" Snake Dance, Global Brilliance "themed Spring Festival Gala organized by the United Nations China Book Society, Melissa Fleming, the United Nations Deputy Secretary General in charge of global communication affairs, expressed this sentiment. Fleming said that he hoped that everyone would embrace the wisdom of the Chinese Spring Festival in this turbulent world and continue to seek ways to end conflicts and solve the global crisis. The Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations held the "Blessing to the United Nations" New Year celebration event at the United Nations headquarters on January 24th. At the event, UN Secretary General Guterres sent New Year's greetings to Chinese people around the world via video and thanked China for its firm support for the United Nations, multilateralism, and global cooperation. Moratinos, the High Representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, congratulated the guests in Chinese on "Happy Spring Festival". He said that "snake" represents wisdom and prudence, as well as change and growth. "Faced with many global challenges, the spirit embodied in the Year of the Snake will inject hope and positive energy into us. Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations Fu Cong said in his speech that snakes symbolize wisdom, spirituality, and rebirth in Chinese culture. At the historic milestone of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and at a critical moment when global governance is facing critical choices, we hope to have more flexibility and patience, to face challenges with courage, to solve problems with wisdom, to transform and rejuvenate in adversity, and to make greater contributions to world peace and development!
