At the press conference held by the Taiyuan Municipal Government Information Office on the 9th, the relevant person in charge of Taiyuan's cultural relics department introduced the phased progress of the city's fourth cultural relics census and the situation of newly discovered immovable cultural relics. Gao Zhenhua, Vice President of Shanxi Archaeological Research Institute and Deputy Director (on secondment) of Taiyuan Cultural Relics Bureau, introduced that since the launch of the census field investigation, Taiyuan City has completed on-site investigations of 30 newly discovered cultural relics clues. This includes important new discoveries such as the Huangchang Grottoes in Wanbailin District and the Fengzhemao Site in Gujiao City. The Huangchang Grottoes in Wanbailin District are located on the top of the soil slope south of Huangchang Village in Wanbailin District, at the northern foot of Shiqianfeng, the main peak of Xishan in Taiyuan. The grotto is carved on a giant rock, facing north and south. There are still 9 small niches on both sides of the cave that have not been fully opened. The plane inside the cave is rectangular, with a flat top and micro arc, and three walls and three niches. The main figures on the three walls of the grottoes all have obvious styles of praising clothing and displaying bones and clear images, which are in line with the reform of Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei, especially the trend of sinicization of grotto sculpture art after the relocation to Luo. They are mostly carved in the form of Southern Dynasty literati costumes. The right wall (west wall) of the grotto features a seated Maitreya statue, which is also a theme from the late Northern Wei Dynasty. There are two inscriptions on the upper left and upper right corners of the wall, and the words "August 15th, 3rd year of Yanchang" can be seen from left to right in the upper right corner. After on-site investigation by experts, the grotto has distinct historical features and clear information, making it the earliest known grotto excavated within the Taiyuan city area. It has important cultural relics and academic value. The discovery of the Huangchang Grottoes has expanded the archaeological community's understanding of the richness of the Xishan Grottoes in Taiyuan, or provided the latest time coordinates for the study of Shanxi grotto temples. Regarding the Fengzhemao Site in Chakou, Gujiao City, Gao Zhenhua introduced that in 2009, local villagers discovered a polished stone chime, several stone axes, and a small mouthed pottery jar about 40 centimeters underground during the cultivation process. They handed them over to the Gujiao Cultural Relics Department, and these artifacts are now preserved in the Gujiao Cultural Relics Tourism Protection and Development Center. In the fourth national cultural relics census, census personnel went to the sites where these relics were unearthed for on-site investigation. During the on-site inspection, multiple pieces of sand and clay pottery were collected from the fields and cultivated ridges, with patterns mostly decorated with basket patterns and some plain patterns. The identifiable objects include pottery pots, pottery jars, and bridge shaped and cockscomb shaped pottery. According to experts from Taiyuan Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, the Fengzhemao Site in Chakou Village, Gujiao City, dates back to the Miaodigou Phase II culture. Its discovery will provide valuable new information for exploring the early civilization of the Chinese nation, exploring the cultural development sequence of the Neolithic period in the Jinzhong Basin, and providing new physical evidence for exploring the appearance of prehistoric culture in the Fen River Basin. In addition, Yingze District of Taiyuan City has conducted a survey and registration of the "small twin towers" discovered during the construction of the Twin Towers Park - the brick tomb tower of the abbot of Yongzuo Temple. It is now managed and maintained by the Taiyuan Park Service Center (Twin Towers Park); Xinghualing District has included the important archaeological discovery of Zhenyuanqiao Site in the construction project of Metro Line 2 in the scope of this census registration; The Jiancaoping District Census Team conducted a survey and registration of Taigang Zhashan Park in accordance with the cultural landscape recognition standards; The Jinyuan District Census Team excavated red resources within the area and, together with experts in cultural relic protection and party history, conducted a cultural relic investigation and value recognition of red relics and historical sites such as the former site of the Taoyuan Coal Mine branch. These newly discovered cultural relics have improved the cultural heritage spectrum of Taiyuan City, filled some gaps in cultural heritage resources, provided physical evidence for historical and cultural research in the region, and laid the foundation for the city to comprehensively enhance the level of cultural heritage protection and utilization Gao Zhenhua said.
