Multiple regions in China collaborate to recite classic texts and engage in dialogue with the Eight Masters of Tang and Song Dynasties

2026-04-03

On the 2nd, at Han Garden in Mengzhou, Henan, 50 students collectively recited the "Teacher's Discourse" and launched a multidimensional cultural activity that integrates "worshiping Han Yu, reciting Han Yu, painting Han Yu, and preaching Han Yu". At the same time, thousands of miles away in the Liuhou Temple in Liuzhou, Guangxi, the sound of ancient qin played and the sound of books was heard. The local people also commemorated the "old mayor" Liu Zongyuan by reciting classics. The Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties were Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan of the Tang Dynasty, and Ouyang Xiu, Su Xun, Su Shi, Su Zhe, Wang Anshi, and Zeng Gong of the Song Dynasty. On that day, the 2026 "Reciting Classics and Remembering the Sages" themed event, led by the Henan Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles, was held simultaneously in six provinces (regions) including Henan, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Sichuan, Hubei, and Guangdong. From Sansu Garden in Jiaxian County, Henan Province, Ouyang Wenzhong Park in Xinzheng, to Wang Anshi Memorial Hall in Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province, Zenggong Cultural Park in Nanfeng, Ouyang Xiu Memorial Hall in Ji'an, and then to Liuhou Temple in Liuzhou, various places have engaged in "dialogue" with the Eight Masters of Tang and Song Dynasties across time and space through forms such as "tribute and commemoration+classic recitation+cultural interpretation+interactive experience". In addition to commemorating the Eight Great Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties, in recent years, many places in Henan have held related commemorative activities, such as Tangyin Youli City to commemorate King Wen of Zhou, Shangqiu to commemorate "Shang Zu" Wang Hai, Nanyang to commemorate "Medical Saint" Zhang Zhongjing, Luohe to commemorate "Character Saint" Xu Shen, and so on. Professor Li Keting from the School of Humanities at Shangqiu Normal University in Henan Province believes that these commemorative activities inherit excellent Chinese culture and can use the wisdom of ancient people to shape new cultural trends of the times, providing useful references for modern society. Zhang Xiangyu, the director of Henan Provincial Institute of Culture and Tourism Planning, stated that these activities are not only ceremonies, but also important carriers for inheriting cultural classics, strengthening identity recognition, and promoting new trends. They can not only allow everyone to draw on the wisdom of the ancients, but also provide impetus for the development of the times. (New Society)
