There is no 'safe' exposure level for haze
2025-05-30
Recently, the Beijing Association for Tobacco Control, the Beijing Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Respiratory Medical Center (China-Japan Friendship Hospital) jointly released the Core Information and Interpretation of "Refusing Haze and Getting Started" (hereinafter referred to as the "Core Information"), which clarifies that "haze" is a compound pollution caused by tobacco smoke and its residues, including second-hand smoke and third-hand smoke. Smoke and haze hazards cover the entire life cycle, and there is no "safe" exposure level. The core information is clear that there are a variety of hazardous substances including carcinogens in haze, and there are dual hazards of immediate inhalation exposure of second-hand smoke and long-term residual exposure of third-hand smoke. Second hand smoke contains at least 250 toxic and harmful substances, of which 69 are carcinogens, present during smoking and for several minutes to hours after cessation; Third-hand smoke continuously releases harmful substances by adsorbing on the surface of objects, and can remain for several days to years after smoking stops. The exposure mode is mainly skin contact, respiratory inhalation or oral intake of pollutants, which will cause "long-term residual exposure". The core information points out that the hazards of haze involve multiple systems such as respiration, circulation, nerves, and immunity. Second hand smoke can cause lung cancer, coronary heart disease and other diseases, while third-hand smoke can damage DNA, induce inflammation and even affect reproductive health. Research has shown that even at extremely low concentrations of haze exposure, long-term accumulation can still cause harm. It should be noted that children, due to their weaker metabolic capacity and higher respiratory rate, are more susceptible to exposure and harm from haze; Exposure of pregnant women to secondhand smoke increases the risk of premature birth and neonatal malformations; Due to the gradual weakening of physical functions, the immune system and various organ functions of the elderly are declining, making it difficult for them to withstand the adverse effects caused by smog. The core message emphasizes that the hazards of haze are widespread and covert, and there is no "safe" exposure level that is harmless to health. Any form of exposure needs to be avoided. Only one person smoking indoors can pollute the entire indoor environment, and third-hand smoke will stick to carpets, furniture and other surfaces for a long time. Ventilation can dilute the smell of second-hand smoke, but third-hand smoke has almost no visual and olfactory warnings, which is difficult to detect directly through the senses, making it easier for the public to reduce their vigilance. Smoking in places such as kitchens, balconies, and ventilation fans can also cause smoke and haze pollution to indoor environments. The notion that "smoking through windows is harmless" is a misconception. To reduce the harm of smog, the core message advocates for a comprehensive smoking ban in all indoor workplaces, public places, public transportation, indoor and outdoor children's activity areas, and other key locations.
