The prosperity of the food delivery market relies on standardization and orderliness

2025-05-26

In the face of the increasingly expanding food delivery market, maintaining the prosperity of food delivery is even more important for enterprises to operate in compliance and compete in an orderly manner. Platform enterprises need to shift from competing for stock to creating incremental growth, and promote the takeaway market to find a way to achieve win-win outcomes for all parties. Recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation, together with multiple departments, held talks with platform enterprises such as JD.com, Meituan, and Ele.me to address prominent issues in the competition of the food delivery industry. This interview is not only a warning of the tense situation in the food delivery market during this period, but also sends a clear signal: legal and standardized operation, fair and orderly competition, and effective protection of the legitimate rights and interests of consumers, platform operators, and food delivery riders are necessary to better maintain "safety on the tongue" and achieve healthy development of the industry. Since JD entered the food delivery business in February this year, three major food delivery platform companies have been constantly discussing topics such as "commission free", "billion dollar subsidies", and "large red envelopes", making the entire food delivery market particularly lively. In the short term, platform operators benefit from "commission free" and traffic support, resulting in a sharp increase in order volume, and consumers also enjoy low prices through various coupons. However, in the long run, the subsidies and discounts offered by food delivery platforms are unsustainable, and platform operators will eventually have to consider the cost pressure of operating on multiple platforms. If the market moves towards disorder and excessive competition, ultimately, it will be difficult to maintain consumer interests. In recent years, China's food delivery industry has developed rapidly. Since the first delivery order was made in 2008, the number of online delivery users in China has exceeded 545 million, accounting for about 50% of the total number of netizens. The food delivery category has also undergone significant changes. Previously, it was just about "transporting delicious food", but now it can "bring everything home". In particular, the new generation of young people, who grew up in the Internet era, are more interested in the consumption experience of "moving your fingers, goods will arrive home immediately", which has also accelerated the prosperity and development of the takeaway market to a certain extent. Maintaining the prosperity of food delivery is even more important for enterprises to operate in compliance and compete in an orderly manner. Competition among platform enterprises is understandable, but it must be fair and orderly. It cannot cross legal boundaries, nor can it sacrifice the interests of operators, consumers, and riders within the platform to achieve false prosperity in the food delivery market. At present, food delivery services have covered more than 2000 county towns across the country and are still expanding to remote counties and townships. The order structure is gradually moving towards full day delivery, and the market prospects are very promising. If platform enterprises want to win greater business opportunities, they must adhere to long-term principles, operate in a legal and standardized manner, focus on promoting high-quality development, better meet market demand, and effectively safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of all parties involved. Delivery riders play a crucial role in the entire delivery ecosystem, serving as a key link between platform operators and consumers. At present, there are over 10 million foreign riders in China, and their labor rights protection not only concerns their immediate interests, but also directly affects the sustainable development of the industry. Since the beginning of this year, some platform companies have introduced new measures to protect the rights and interests of food delivery riders, including paying the five insurances and one fund, piloting "overtime exemption", and launching a "fatigue prevention" mechanism. These measures are not only in line with the vital interests of workers, but also conducive to promoting more platforms to restructure the rider employment model, thereby improving the overall quality and efficiency of food delivery services and forming a virtuous cycle. Faced with the expanding scale of the food delivery market, platform enterprises need to anchor their competitive coordinates with innovation, shift from competing for stock to creating increment, and promote the food delivery market to find a way to achieve a win-win situation for all parties. For example, working together with catering businesses to accelerate digital transformation, reduce their operating costs, and give them more energy to enrich product supply, improve catering quality, especially food safety; Continuously optimizing algorithm technology, smoothing the delivery path for riders, and dynamically balancing rider safety and efficiency; Actively exploring the service of going global, participating in global industrial division of labor and competition, enhancing the core competitiveness of enterprises, and promoting the better and further development of the food delivery industry.
