Moral memory as a special form of memory

2025-05-26

Moral memory "is an ethical concept that has only emerged in recent years. It is the ability or capability of humans to record and reproduce their moral life experiences. As a special form of human memory, it occupies a crucial position in the world of human memory and has relative independence. It does not use all human life experiences as memory objects, but only human moral life experiences as memory objects. The reality of moral memory is contained in the history and reality of human moral life, existing both as the basic content of human moral life facts and as the fundamental dimension of human moral life values. Moral memory can be divided into individual moral memory and collective moral memory, with the former being empirical and the latter being transcendent. We call the dialectics followed by moral memory the dialectics of moral memory. To construct, inherit, and safeguard moral memory, it is necessary to prevent and resist the interference and infringement of erroneous concepts such as historical nihilism and cultural nihilism. Thoroughly and systematically studying moral memory will inevitably promote the rise and development of moral memory ethics. (New Society)
