The more open scientific research is, the more powerful science popularization becomes
2025-05-23
Close contact with large scientific installations, listening to academicians and experts explain the frontiers of science, and immersing in the magical scientific phenomena... Recently, the 21st Public Science Day of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was held, with 135 affiliated units "opening up", nearly 400 scientific research sites open, and nearly 400 popular science activities organized, attracting more than 6000 scientific researchers and volunteers to participate, bringing a popular science feast to the majority of young people. In order to better meet people's exploration and curiosity about artificial intelligence, this year's Public Science Day has specially added special science popularization activities related to artificial intelligence. For example, the Software Research Institute showcases the "intelligent brain" and operating system of robots to the public; The artificial intelligence biomedical engineering science popularization museum under construction by Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering Technology is open to the public for trial... This is a vivid footnote to the new height of China's science popularization industry. Research institutes have opened their doors to welcome visitors, breaking the "dimensional wall" between science and the public. For a long time, research institutes have been regarded as "ivory towers", with a natural sense of distance between cutting-edge technological achievements and the general public. Nowadays, the public enters the laboratory, witnessing the wonderful experiments of the microscopic world with their own eyes, and touching cutting-edge technological equipment with their own hands. This immersive experience makes abstract scientific concepts vivid and tangible. For teenagers, a close encounter with a large scientific facility or a science popularization lecture by an academician that is easy to understand may plant the seeds of science in their hearts and ignite a dream of serving the country through technology. This is not only the transmission of knowledge, but also the inheritance of scientific spirit. In science popularization, people have personally experienced the rapid improvement of China's technological strength, witnessed China's aerospace achievements, understood the technical principles behind high-speed rail, and believed that national pride and cultural confidence will arise spontaneously. This determination and cultural confidence in technological self-improvement will be transformed into a powerful spiritual driving force for promoting technological innovation, inspiring more people to engage in scientific research, climb new heights, achieve self-improvement dreams in international technological competition, and showcase China's strength. From the perspective of national development strategy, science popularization is an important part of consolidating the foundation of innovation. Technological innovation is the core of a country's competitiveness, while science popularization is the soil for cultivating innovative talents and creating an innovative atmosphere. When more and more people understand and love science, the innovation vitality of the whole society can be fully stimulated. As the backbone of the national scientific research force, research institutes take the initiative to undertake the responsibility of popularizing science, transforming scientific research achievements into easy to understand knowledge, and enabling the public to understand how technological innovation can improve their lives and promote social progress. This helps to enhance the scientific literacy of the entire population and cultivate a broader mass base for technological innovation. When more individuals possess scientific thinking and innovative consciousness, they can better understand, support, and participate in the cause of technological innovation, forming a good trend of advocating science and encouraging innovation throughout society. If scientific research achievements only stay in the laboratory and cannot be transformed into real productivity, their value will be difficult to fully realize. Science popularization is an important bridge connecting technological achievements with social needs. Holding open events in research institutes is conducive to cultivating market foundations, exploring potential market demands, accelerating the transformation and landing of scientific and technological achievements from "laboratories" to "production lines", and achieving the "two wings" of innovative development. Science popularization is a long-term and systematic project. In the future, it is necessary to further integrate resources from all parties and build a comprehensive and multi-level science popularization system. On the one hand, the government needs to increase policy and funding support to guide and encourage more social forces to participate in science popularization. On the other hand, universities, research institutes, media, and third-party organizations in society should also fully leverage their respective advantages, innovate and explore new forms of science popularization, enrich the supply of science popularization products and services, make the wings of science popularization more powerful, and allow innovative wisdom and strength to flow more fully.
