Make geological parks a vivid footnote to the beauty of China

In 2015, in order to further protect global geological heritage and natural landscapes, the 38th session of the UNESCO General Conference approved the "International Earth Science and Geoparks Program" and established the "UNESCO Global Geoparks". Since joining the program, China has actively explored geological heritage protection and utilization models that are in line with local conditions and highlight regional characteristics, winning widespread praise from the international community. Using geological parks as a medium, we are striving forward on the path of modernization towards harmonious coexistence between humans and nature - a path that carries both reverence for the history of the Earth and responsibility for the future of humanity. To do a good job in protecting and utilizing geological relics, we can start from multiple aspects. Building a scientific foundation and unlocking geological codes through interdisciplinary research. Geological relics are the "living archives" of Earth's evolution, and their value cannot be excavated without the long-term scientific research and perseverance of geologists who have rooted themselves in the front line. Currently, geological research has already broken through traditional boundaries, and geologists have constructed a new research paradigm by integrating interdisciplinary perspectives such as ecology, climatology, and archaeology. Taking the study of karst landforms in Longgang, Yunyang, Chongqing as an example, geologists not only revealed the correlation between geological tectonic movements and hydrological changes in the Yangtze River Basin through rock sampling, paleontological fossil analysis, and hydrological data modeling, but also systematically restored the synergistic effect of paleontological community evolution on landform formation. Based on decades of field research and empirical data, geologists are deciphering the code of Earth's evolution and predicting the risks of human activities. In the "geology ecology" joint scientific research in the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and other places, the interdisciplinary team led by geologists not only provided scientific basis for the protection of the geopark, but also contributed key observation data to the global response to climate change through glacier monitoring, carbon sink assessment and other research. Empower education and build a diverse communication system of "geology+". One of the core missions of global geoparks is education. How to transform profound geological knowledge into content that the public can perceive and participate in? The answer lies in building a multi-dimensional education model of "geology+". For example, "Geology+Ecology" creates a natural classroom. In Kangbula, Qinghai, the Danxia landform coexists with the wetland ecosystem in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, forming a unique "mountain water forest field lake grass sand" community of life. Based on this advantage, the local area has developed a "Geological Ecological Observation Corridor", where tourists can understand how landform evolution affects ecological processes such as vegetation distribution and animal habitat through on-site observation. For example, "Geology+Study" activates young people's interest in science. Chongqing Yunyang Geopark has launched the "Dinosaur+Research Tour" integration card, where students practice scientific research methods by collecting rock samples, simulating stratigraphic profiles, and participating in paleontological fossil restoration activities. This type of study program not only cultivates the scientific thinking of young people, but also radiates the concept of geological protection to families and communities through the "home school community" linkage mechanism. For example, 'Geology+Culture' tells a good story of the coexistence of humanities and nature. Geological relics are often intertwined with human civilization. Combining geological landscapes with myths, legends, historical events, and folk art can enhance cultural identity and promote natural education to deeply penetrate people's hearts. Technology adds wings and digitization enhances protection and experience efficiency. The application of digital technology is opening up new paths for the protection and utilization of geological relics. In Zhangye Global Geopark in Gansu Province, VR technology has reconstructed the formation process of Danxia landform over billions of years, and visitors can "cross" to the geological movement site by wearing equipment; AR interactive devices bring fossils to life by scanning the surface of rocks and displaying three-dimensional images of ancient marine organisms on the screen. This type of technology breaks through the limitations of time and space, making the dissemination of geological knowledge more vivid and attractive. At the same time, big data and artificial intelligence are optimizing the management of geological parks. Through satellite remote sensing, sensor networks, and drone inspections, management departments can monitor the stability of geological structures, tourist carrying capacity, and changes in ecologically sensitive areas in real time, achieving precise implementation of protective measures. For example, Yunnan Shilin Geological Park utilizes a smart platform to dynamically regulate tourist flow, which not only ensures the tourism experience but also reduces the interference of human activities on fragile karst landforms. Innovative integration, exploring the balance between protection and development. The key to the sustainable development of geological parks lies in practicing the concept of "green mountains and clear waters are as valuable as mountains of gold and silver" and finding a balance between scientific protection and rational utilization. On the one hand, we will implement ecological environment zoning control, strictly adhere to the ecological protection red line, environmental quality bottom line, and resource utilization upper line, continuously improve the natural protected area system with national parks as the main body, nature reserves as the foundation, and various natural parks as supplements, and solidly carry out the protection of geological relics and ecological restoration work; On the other hand, guided by the concept of green development, we should explore new models of "protective utilization". In addition, new business models such as "geological health preservation" and "geological photography" are flourishing, providing more new growth points for the high-quality development of regional economy and society. Next, high-level ecological protection should be used to promote high-quality development, adding greenery and beauty to the people's surroundings, and making the motherland more green and vibrant.
