China adds three globally important agricultural cultural heritages

2025-05-22

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, on May 19th, three heritage systems in China, namely the Gaolan Shichuan Ancient Pear Orchard System in Gansu, the Danshui Pearl Compound Breeding System in Deqing, Zhejiang, and the Fuding White Tea Culture System in Fujian, were successfully evaluated by experts and officially recognized as important global agricultural cultural heritage by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. As of now, China's number of globally important agricultural cultural heritage sites has increased to 25, maintaining its position as the world's largest. The Gaolan Shichuan Ancient Pear Orchard System is located in Shichuan Town, Gaolan County, Lanzhou City, Gansu Province. In the long process of pear orchard production and management, the local ancestors have created and passed down unique farming methods such as the "heavenly handle style" high-altitude operation and high pole hanging branches, green plant protection measures such as dust removal and insect control with tobacco juice, ecological courtyard models such as compound planting and breeding, water with fertilizer, and traditional preservation methods such as soil cellar storage. The Deqing freshwater pearl composite aquaculture system is located in Deqing County, Zhejiang Province. It is based on the natural principle of mutualistic symbiosis between fish and clams, and gradually evolved and formed into a composite aquaculture system that covers abundant aquatic biological resources such as clams, fish, zooplankton, benthic animals, and aquatic plants, with the shell pearl aquaculture technology originating locally as the core. The Fuding White Tea Culture System is located in Fuding City, Fujian Province. Its unique geographical location, climate conditions, and long history have nurtured unique tea tree varieties and tea making techniques, as well as profound cultural connotations. The system includes national level high-quality varieties such as Fuding Dabai tea, Fuding Dahao tea, and local vegetable tea populations, while retaining traditional sexual reproduction methods. The ecological planting mode and three-dimensional landscape of tea gardens have improved the efficiency of resource utilization and pest control. (New Society)
