After trial, the court found that the defendant Zhou Liren and the victims Zhang and Zhou were master's students from Xiangtan University in 2022. In June 2023, Zhou Liren was transferred to the dormitory where Zhang and others lived. Afterwards, Zhou Liren had multiple disputes with roommates such as Zhang over trivial matters, resulting in accumulated grievances. In January 2024, Zhou Liren downloaded multiple articles related to colchicine from the internet and purchased colchicine powder to hide in his dormitory wardrobe. From March to April 2024, Zhou Liren and his roommates Zhang and Zhou had escalating conflicts and multiple intense arguments. On April 3rd, Zhou Liren learned that the two had requested to be transferred out of the dormitory, and subsequently added colchicine powder to the canned cereal shared by Zhang and Zhou in the dormitory. On April 7th, Zhang experienced symptoms such as vomiting after consuming the cereal and went to the hospital for treatment. On April 13th, Zhang died despite rescue efforts. After identification, Zhang died due to multiple organ system failure caused by acute colchicine poisoning. On April 17th, Zhou Liren was arrested and brought to justice by the public security organs. It was also found that Zhou Liren's undergraduate major involved colchicine. After trial, the court found that the defendant Zhou Li, in order to vent his personal anger, put highly toxic substances into the canned cereal shared by two roommates in the dormitory, causing the death of one of Zhang. His behavior constitutes intentional homicide. Zhou Liren was dissatisfied with his roommates due to daily trivial matters, and took advantage of his professional knowledge to poison them, intending to kill two roommates. Zhou was spared for not consuming the food; During the rescue of Zhang's poisoning, he deliberately concealed the facts and delayed treatment, ultimately leading to his death due to multiple organ system failure; After the incident, attempting to conceal and destroy important physical evidence to cover up the crime and evade punishment, with despicable motives, extremely deep subjective malice, and a negative social impact, the crime is extremely serious and should be punished according to law.
