On March 27th local time, UN Secretary General Guterres issued a statement expressing deep concern over the current situation in South Sudan. The statement said that the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMIS) has called on all parties in South Sudan to exercise restraint and abide by the Revitalization Peace Agreement. In addition, the special delegation, together with other regions and international peace partners, expressed serious concern over the house arrest of South Sudan's First Vice President, Riek Machar. The United Nations warns that this action brings South Sudan one step closer to the outbreak of civil war and the breakdown of the Revitalization Peace Agreement. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan once again urges the President and First Vice President to resolve their differences through dialogue, immediately cease military confrontation, uphold the Revitalization Peace Agreement, and jointly promote the country towards a peaceful and democratic future that the people deserve. The United Nations has repeatedly emphasized the suffering endured by the people of South Sudan, and the current situation shows that they can no longer bear the catastrophic consequences of civil war. It is worth noting that 9.3 million people already require some form of humanitarian assistance, and ongoing conflicts, climate change, and economic crises will put more people at risk of survival. The leaders of South Sudan must prioritize the interests of the people. The urgent task is to prevent the country from falling into a deeper crisis. (New Society)
