Cultural China in the New Era of China Research Tour | One River Divides into Two Banks, Rice Fragrance Drifts for Thousands of Years

The Yuan River flows, splitting open the yellow soil on both sides. In Anjiang Town, Hongjiang City, Hunan Province, Tangtangyuan River is not only a geographical boundary, but also a "temporal and spatial corridor" carrying the genes of agricultural civilization. On the north bank of the Yuan River, digging through the soil layers of the Gao Temple site, archaeological discoveries such as carbonized rice grains, phoenix patterned white pottery, and sacrificial pit remains outline the scene of the ancestors' "rice, rice, soup, and fish" in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Since its discovery in 1986, this Neolithic Beiqiu site has undergone four archaeological excavations in 1991, 2004, 2005, and 2024, yielding rich remains of the Gaomiao culture, Daxi culture, and Qujialing culture. In 2006, the Gaomiao Site was selected as one of the "Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries in China in 2005". Archaeologists discovered carbonized rice grains in the cultural layer 7400 years ago, indicating that humans in this area began to consume rice more than 7000 years ago Xiang Xinlin, Deputy Director of the Hongjiang Gaomiao Site Protection and Utilization Center, said. Across the river, Anjiang Agricultural School is the starting point of another legend. In 1953, after graduating from the Genetics and Breeding major at Southwest Agricultural University, Yuan Longping, known as the "father of hybrid rice," was assigned to work at Anjiang Agricultural School in Hunan, where he began a lifelong dialogue with rice. In July 1961, Yuan Longping discovered a rice plant that stood out from the crowd in the fields around Anjiang Agricultural School. The discovery of this natural hybrid rice plant inspired his research on hybrid rice. After unremitting research, Yuan Longping published a paper titled "Male Infertility in Rice" in 1966. This paper declares for the first time to the world that male sterility in rice exists in nature, ushering in a new era of hybrid rice development. A river of spring water connects the cultural genes of both sides. Nowadays, Hongjiang City has linked the rich cultural resources on both sides of the river into a line, and the construction of Anjiang Agricultural Culture Tourism Zone has begun to show results. Not far from the Gaomiao Site, the Gaomiao Site Museum, which resembles golden rice, began trial operation in September last year. Entering the museum, digital technology reproduces the living scenes of our ancestors, allowing visitors to experience the feeling of "traveling" to ancient tribes. Cultural relics cannot speak, but technology can bring them to life, "Xiang Xinlin told reporters. In the exhibition hall of Anjiang Agricultural School Memorial Park, yellowed paper manuscripts and hybrid rice specimens attract many tourists to stop and take a look. Many of the visitors are young people who come to pursue the spirit of scientists, "Xie Jun, director of the Anjiang Agricultural School Memorial Park Management Center, told reporters. By jointly creating the Anjiang Agricultural Culture Tourism Area with attractions such as the Gaomiao Site, the scale effect has gradually emerged, and the number of tourists to Anjiang Agricultural School achieved a significant increase last year. Nowadays, inheritance is continuing in the fields. In an experimental field at Anjiang Agricultural School, early rice seedlings are sprouting new shoots and can be transplanted in mid to late April. The technological innovation of hybrid rice at Anjiang Agricultural School has been ongoing Wang Zhiqiang, Deputy Director of the Huaihua Branch of the National Hybrid Rice Engineering Technology Research Center, told reporters that currently there are 8 full-time researchers working tirelessly in the experimental fields of Anjiang Agricultural School, carrying out work such as breeding and promoting new hybrid rice varieties. "In addition to conducting scientific research experiments, we also attach great importance to the cultivation of reserve talents, hoping to continue the rice culture and scientific spirit nurtured in this land," (Xinhua News Agency)
