The exhibition "Thinking East, Thinking West - English Block Calligraphy Classroom" will hold a media preview at the Hong Kong Museum of Art on the 25th and will be open to the public from the 26th. It is reported that internationally renowned artist Xu Bing will serve as the "Cultural Promotion Ambassador" of Hong Kong from March 2024. "Xu Bing in Hong Kong: English Block Calligraphy" is his first commissioned art project prepared in this capacity, which includes planning the exhibition "Thinking East and West - English Block Calligraphy Classroom". The reporter saw on site that the exhibition space was transformed into a classroom and incorporated unique language features of Hong Kong, such as greetings and colloquialisms. In addition to exhibiting Xu Bing's calligraphy works in English block characters for the new exhibition book, there are also brushes and calligraphy stickers in the exhibition hall. Visitors can try to write and learn about English block character calligraphy. It is reported that the exhibition will be held at the Hong Kong Museum of Art until July 30th, and from September 29th to January 11th, 2026, it will be moved to the Oil Street Art Space in North Point. In addition, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government will collaborate with MTR Corporation Limited to showcase Xu Bing's latest calligraphy works at four MTR stations in Sheung Wan, Admiralty, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, and Wan Chai. English Block Calligraphy "is a new writing form created by Xu Bing since 1993, which resembles Chinese but is actually in English. This unique writing style that integrates Chinese and Western cultures showcases a diverse cultural landscape that is compatible with both the East and the West, and is also in line with the urban characteristics of Hong Kong's fusion of Chinese and Western cultures. Xu Bing transformed the exhibition space into an "English Block Calligraphy Classroom" through installation art, showcasing it around the world and allowing audiences from different cultural backgrounds to participate in learning and writing English block calligraphy, experiencing the joy of traditional Chinese art.
