OECD warns of severe drought risk in Greater Paris region
2025-03-18
On March 17th local time, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released a report on addressing drought issues in the Greater Paris region. The OECD warns in its report that the Greater Paris region will face severe drought risks in the future, resulting in economic losses of up to 2.5 billion euros. The OECD warns that severe drought could have a "serious impact" on economic activity in the Greater Paris region, with agriculture and manufacturing being the most severely affected economic sectors. The report considers climate change as a significant factor affecting drought issues in the Greater Paris region. The report data shows that since 1990, the average temperature in the Greater Paris region has increased by 2 degrees Celsius, while soil moisture has decreased by 5%. Due to the continuous rise in temperature, summer precipitation in the region will further decrease, while water evaporation will accelerate, thereby increasing the likelihood of severe drought. In addition to climate change, socio-economic development will also increase the risk of drought. The OECD calls for the Greater Paris region to develop long-term strategic plans to address drought, allocate water resources reasonably, and respond promptly to the long-term pressures brought about by climate change; At the same time, a robust drought risk assessment should be established, including predicting changes in water supply and demand, and incorporating the goal of controlling drought risk into government decision-making. The OECD calls for more investment in relevant areas in the Greater Paris region now, otherwise future droughts will pose severe challenges to Paris and its surrounding areas. (New Society)
