Sweden continues to strengthen its military construction
2025-03-18
Recently, Sweden, which has just celebrated its first anniversary of joining NATO, has reported a series of military construction plans, including the release of defense construction plans, large-scale procurement of weapons and equipment, and frequent training activities. Commentators say that Sweden's military actions are both influenced by the security situation in Europe and aimed at expanding its influence through NATO's northern expansion. According to Sweden's recently released defense plan for the fiscal year 2025 to 2030, the country's defense budget for 2025 is approximately $13.7 billion, a year-on-year increase of 10%. An additional $16.864 billion will be invested in defense construction over the next five years. By 2028, the country's defense spending will account for 2.6% of GDP. According to the plan, by 2030, the Swedish Army will complete the deployment of four brigade level combat groups, with an average annual recruitment of over 10000 soldiers. Under the guidance of NATO allies, training courses will be increased and the quality of troops will be improved. At the same time, the country will also upgrade its weapons and equipment, accelerating the installation of long-range strike weapons such as cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, and rocket launchers. At the beginning of this year, Sweden ordered 44 new Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks from Germany and modernized and upgraded 66 existing tanks. During the same period, the Swedish military also ordered 775 military trucks of type 4 from two local military enterprises, expected to be delivered within three years. The Swedish Navy will replace the new L ü hleau class frigates in the next five years and complete the mid-term renovation of five active Visby class frigates, including the installation of new air defense systems; The coastal missile defense force will be doubled in size and deployed to the Arctic coast and adjacent areas of the Baltic Sea. The Swedish Air Force plans to purchase three "Global Eye" airborne early warning aircraft and receive the new JAS-39E "Eagle Lion" fighter jet in 2026. At the same time, the "Black Hawk" helicopter and SK-50 trainer aircraft will be included in the procurement list. In addition, Sweden will also follow the example of the German Defense Forces to form a new force specifically responsible for homeland security. Starting from 2027, the Swedish Ministry of Defense will significantly increase research funding by over 50%. According to the plan, Sweden will also accelerate the construction of networks, space, air defense and anti missile fields, promote the accession to NATO's comprehensive air defense and anti missile system, and carry out military cooperation with NATO allies on polar space monitoring. In recent times, Swedish military actions have been very frequent. In January, an overseas special task force consisting of about 600 people, mainly composed of the 71st Army Battalion, was stationed in Latvia. Swedish Prime Minister Kristensen stated that this is Sweden's first overseas military presence since joining NATO. Subsequently, the 71st Battalion joined the multinational brigade level combat group and participated in the "Oak Resolve" joint exercise held along the Baltic Sea coast. Starting from February, two Swedish Navy frigates began participating in NATO's "Baltic Sentinel" operation along the line from the Gulf of Finland to the northern Baltic Sea. Starting from April, the Swedish "Eagle Lion" fighter jets will be responsible for combat patrols in the Baltic Sea and airspace, which will be carried out by multiple NATO countries on a rotating basis. Recently, the Swedish Air Force dispatched about 8 Eagle Lion fighter jets to Poland to protect NATO supply lines and logistics hubs, along with 110 staff members. It is reported that Sweden is attempting to play a greater role in Nordic and Eastern European affairs and expand its influence by expanding its overseas troops and participating in multiple exercises.
