Hong Kong leads research and development of robots to assist national space missions

2025-03-17

The Hong Kong SAR government announced on the 16th that it has established the Hong Kong Space Robotics and Energy Center under the "InnoHK Innovation Hong Kong R&D Platform", led by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, to develop a multifunctional lunar operation robot and mobile charging station, contributing to the Chang'e-8 mission. Yu Hongyu, Dean of the Institute of Space Science and Technology at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, introduced that the robot is equipped with dual robotic arms for arranging and installing instruments, collecting lunar samples, and can also charge other lunar devices in the form of a mobile charging station. Robots can perceive the terrain and topography of the moon in real time, and plan and optimize their walking paths. Yu Hongyu said that researchers have developed corresponding software to cope with the low gravity and harsh environment on the lunar surface, ensuring that robots can autonomously change their posture and operating functions according to changes in the environment at that time during operation. To accomplish this task, the SAR government has established the Hong Kong Space Robotics and Energy Center under the "InnoHK Innovation Hong Kong R&D Platform", which is jointly developed by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, several local and mainland universities, the Shanghai Aerospace Technology Research Institute, the South African National Space Agency, and other institutions. The Innovation and Technology Commission of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has preliminarily estimated that the Hong Kong Space Robotics and Energy Centre will provide training for about 20 doctoral students and hire over 70 researchers in related fields. The center will establish the basic capabilities of local aerospace technology, realizing cutting-edge innovation from concept, development, production, testing to system. Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, stated that Hong Kong has a strong foundation in basic scientific research. The government strongly supports local universities and research institutions in conducting research related to aerospace technology, contributing to the construction of a strong aerospace country and promoting Hong Kong's development into an international innovation and technology center.
