Self discipline challenge? Wanted to 'lie down and win', but was' chopped leeks'

2025-02-20

The challenges of solitude, self-discipline, and not using mobile phones, as the number and difficulty of challenges increase, the corresponding bonuses become more generous... I believe many people have come across advertisements for similar activities on social media platforms. However, there are few successful cases, and there have been many disputes caused by challengers losing high registration fees due to strict rules. What medicine is sold in the gourd for this type of "lying down and winning" challenge? There are three common types of self-discipline challenges where "qualification" is used as a gimmick and "disclaimer" is used to shift the blame. One type is slow live streaming set up by domestic and foreign social media influencers and bloggers, which attracts netizens' attention and rewards by recording closed lives as a selling point; One is a short-term challenge with a public welfare nature, such as "8 hours without using a phone", advocating people to "put down their phones and regain peace"; The third method is to recruit challengers and earn high bonuses by paying registration fees. Half Month Talk reporters contacted an organization in Heilongjiang that organizes self-discipline challenges through a short video platform. The recruitment posters sent by its staff show that they can challenge "self-discipline closure" for 5 days, 7 days, 8 days, 18 days, and 25 days respectively. Taking the 18 day new event as an example, the registration fee is 15000 yuan, and the challenge rules are: 10000 yuan will be awarded on the 7th day, 60000 yuan on the 10th day, 140000 yuan on the 13th day, 300000 yuan on the 18th day, and the registration fee will be refunded. The staff showed reporters a large number of pictures and videos to prove the company's "qualifications", such as video recommendations claiming to be "central media hosts" and screenshots of videos promoting "sports champions" to help spread the message. In addition, a company engaged in self-discipline challenges in Nanchang, Jiangxi also uses various qualification certificates, advertising broadcast certificates, and other "endorsement" information. According to the "Self discipline Closed Challenge" contract provided by the staff mentioned above, applicants need to sign a "Safety Disclaimer Agreement". The challenge rules have 21 provisions regarding challengers, including "cannot cover their phones, and if they cannot be seen in the monitoring, it will be considered as covering (not considered as covering while walking or moving), otherwise it will be considered as a challenge failure", "During the challenge period, they must accumulate at least one hour of exercise and fitness per day", etc. At the same time, it is agreed that "if Party B is judged to have failed, they shall not stir up trouble, cause trouble unreasonably, or maliciously cause trouble". Reporters have found that in recent years, many challengers in various regions have been tempted by high prize money to sign up for the competition, but ultimately failed due to extremely strict rules and "lost" the registration fee. Some even filed a lawsuit against the organizers. In September 2024, a challenger from Shaanxi Province signed up for the Solo Challenge three times, but was found to have failed the challenge due to facial occlusion for more than 3 seconds, covering his face with his back to the camera while making the bed, and covering items in the room while moving up. He not only did not receive any money, but also lost 20400 yuan in registration fees. Mr. Zhang from Shanghai has challenged 10 times and has been sentenced to failure. After consulting with a lawyer, he decided to sue. From multiple failed cases of challenges, it appears that the organizers are 'paying attention to details', but in reality, they are' making arbitrary judgments'. For example, multiple companies have provided challenge rules that prohibit touching private parts of the body under surveillance, but Mr. Zhang has reported that placing his hand on his thigh has also been found a violation. The reason given by the other party is that "the area between the knee and thigh is called a private area", and taking off glasses is also considered a violation of the rule that "no clothing can be worn or taken off under surveillance". Zhang Yipeng, a lawyer from a law firm in Beijing, stated that some of the self-discipline challenge rules involve overbearing clauses and infringement of personal privacy. Due to the fact that the interpretation of rules is in the hands of the other party and there is a lack of third-party supervision, participants are in an extremely passive position. "" Lying down to win "challenges cannot be used as profit-making tools." The moment you pay the registration fee, you already lose. "" You value hundreds of thousands of yuan in cash, but others only want to earn your registration fee. "After the chaos of self-discipline challenges was frequently exposed, many netizens pointed out that the high registration fee combined with strict rules is clearly" cutting the leek ". Previously, a challenger filed a lawsuit against the organizers after failing the challenge, demanding repayment of the registration fee of 6000 yuan. The court shall make a comprehensive judgment on the fault and losses of both parties, and the activity party shall refund the original lawsuit of 5400 yuan. The court ruled that paying 6000 yuan to participate in the activity is to win 250000 yuan, which contains a considerable amount of "gambling" elements and conflicts with the friendly and honest values advocated by the socialist core values. Therefore, a negative evaluation should be given. Zhang Yipeng believes that relevant departments and online platforms should strengthen supervision and content review of similar activities. On the one hand, they should investigate whether the relevant companies are suspected of false advertising and fraud. On the other hand, short video platforms also need to constrain the traffic diversion behavior of such activities. (New Society)
