Norway tests F-35 fighter jet using biofuels
2025-02-19
Since the widespread use of fossil fuels in the 20th century, the carbon dioxide produced by their combustion is considered the main cause of the exacerbation of the "greenhouse effect" on Earth, and various civilian and military aircraft that have developed rapidly in the past century are recognized as "fuel consumers". To change this situation, the F-35 fighter jet produced by Lockheed Martin in the United States has been approved to use "sustainable aviation fuel", which will help reduce the aircraft's carbon emissions. According to Lockheed Martin, the current F-35 fighter jets mainly use aviation fuel. In the future, F-35 fighter jets can use new "sustainable aviation fuels" to effectively reduce their fuel consumption. According to reports, the Norwegian Ministry of Defense, which was the first to use "sustainable aviation fuel" for the F-35 fighter jet, will officially conduct relevant tests in January 2025. The proportion of "sustainable aviation fuel" used in the test was 60% aviation fuel plus 40% biofuel, and the results verified that "sustainable aviation fuel" can be used for the F-35 fighter jet. It is reported that biofuels in "sustainable aviation fuels" are mainly made from food residues and agricultural and forestry raw materials by-products. The production process does not affect the original food supply chain, nor does it cut down trees, thus having the potential for sustainable use. This move can enable the F-35 fighter jet to reduce its reliance on traditional supply chains while reducing the use of aviation fuel. (New Society)
