2025-02-07
On the 6th, Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology announced the excavation data of Wei Jin tombs in Shangmiao Village, Fenyang, Shanxi. Among them, M2 and M5 are brick chamber tombs from the Wei Jin period, which is the first discovery in the Lvliang area. This is of great significance for studying the evolution of tomb forms in the Lvliang area and the regional characteristics of tombs in the Wei Jin and Northern Dynasties. From July to November 2021, the Shanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology and the Lvliang City Cultural Relics Archaeological Survey and Exploration Team formed a joint archaeological team to conduct field excavations of ancient tombs within the construction project area of Shanxi Xinjin Shang Winery. Among them, M2 consists of a tomb passage, tomb door, corridor, sealed door, main chamber, and side chamber. Archaeologists cleared a total of 15 objects of various types, and 10 sets of pottery were unearthed from the main chamber, including copper mirrors, pottery jars, silver bracelets, copper hairpins, etc. M5 is a brick single room tomb, with a total of 5 unearthed artifacts including copper mirrors, copper hairpins, pottery jars, and curtain seats. According to Wang Pujun, the leader of the archaeological excavation project, the two tombs date back to the same period and belong to different family tombs from the same period. Although no objects with clear chronology have been unearthed from the two tombs, based on the overall shape of the tombs and the unearthed objects, both tombs are from the Wei and Jin dynasties. This is the first discovery in the Lvliang area, filling the gap in the funeral history of the region and having important significance for studying the evolution of tomb forms in the Lvliang area, as well as the regional characteristics of tombs in the Wei, Jin, and Northern Dynasties.
