2025-01-23

On the 22nd, Sun Yuhan, Secretary for Labour and Welfare of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, stated in the Legislative Council that since the launch of the "High end Talent Pass Scheme" at the end of 2022, more than half of the talents who came to Hong Kong through the scheme have completed local employment, mainly engaged in management and professional work. As of the end of 2024, the "Gaocai Tong Plan" has received approximately 116000 applications, with nearly 92000 approved, and over 75000 high-end talents and their families arriving in Hong Kong. Sun Yuhan said that the survey results show that high-end talents and their spouses have a direct economic contribution to Hong Kong. More than half of these people are under the age of 40, and many have settled in Hong Kong with their young children, adding a new force to the Hong Kong workforce and having a positive impact on the population structure of Hong Kong. Sun Yuhan introduced that the median monthly income of these high-end talents is about HKD 50000, and about a quarter of them earn HKD 100000 or more per month. Nearly 20% of the spouses of high-end talents who come to Hong Kong have completed local employment, with the majority engaged in high-tech work. While attracting talent, the SAR government also focuses on "retaining talent". In his latest policy address, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam proposed that from 2025 to 2027, no less than 50000 talents in Hong Kong should successfully apply for visa extensions each year. The role of the SAR government is not just to provide the necessary support for talents, but to continue to vigorously develop the economy and emerging industries, provide a favorable environment for the development of local and overseas talents, and provide solid support for establishing an international high-end talent gathering highland Sun Yuhan said.
