The advanced A-second laser facility for national major scientific and technological infrastructure has officially started construction

2025-01-10

On January 10, the advanced attosecond laser facility, a major national science and technology infrastructure, was officially started in Dongguan, Guangdong. The facility was constructed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with a total of 10 beam lines and 22 application terminals. The six beam lines under construction this time are in the charge of the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the other four beam lines will be constructed in Xi'an, Shaanxi, in the charge of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Xi'an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics. The project plans to build a comprehensive ultrafast electron dynamics research facility with attosecond time resolution and high spatiotemporal coherence over a period of 5 years, in order to track, measure, and manipulate electron motion, and explore the evolution laws of material states in depth. It is expected to provide key technical support for China to achieve major breakthroughs in the cutting-edge basic research field of material science. A second is currently the shortest time scale that humans can grasp, with 1 A second being only one billionth of a billionth of a second (10-18 seconds). Within 1 second, light can travel 300000 kilometers, equivalent to circling the Earth's equator 7 and a half times. However, within 1 attosecond, the propagation distance of light is only the size of an atom (about 0.3 nanometers), which is equivalent to the distance traveled by electrons in an atom. The emergence of attosecond lasers has made observing the motion of electrons a reality and a significant breakthrough in the history of scientific development. The attosecond laser is like an "ultra high speed camera" used to capture the "dynamic images" of rapidly moving electrons, recording their motion and the quantum properties, magnetic changes, chemical reactions, and material phase transitions they determine. The attosecond laser provides a new technological means for studying major scientific problems in disciplines such as physics, chemistry, materials, information, and biomedical science. It is expected to generate new breakthroughs in basic research and industrial technology fields, and therefore has important scientific and strategic significance. (New Society)
