Today, the Supreme People's Procuratorate released five typical cases of procuratorial organs punishing news extortion and fake news crimes in accordance with the law, including the extortion case of Zheng and others, providing reference for procuratorial organs to handle criminal cases such as fabricating false news for extortion and impersonating journalists for news extortion in accordance with the law. Since the beginning of this year, the procuratorial organs have carried out in-depth special actions such as "cracking down on counterfeits and cracking down" and "prosecuting and protecting enterprises", focusing on punishing crimes such as extortion and blackmail committed against enterprises, as well as crimes related to the "network water army" and industry "insiders" who promote online extortion and other behaviors. From January to September 2024, the procuratorial organs handled a total of 159 cases involving news extortion and fake news involving 423 people. The typical cases released this time fully demonstrate the new characteristics, trends, and difficulties in handling current cases involving "news extortion and fake news". In the extortion case involving Zheng and others, the extorted company was a global chain brand, and the incident occurred during a critical period when the company was applying for listing, reflecting the clear targeting and timing of the criminal target. The Song extortion case and the Luo extortion case provide guidance on how to distinguish between normal news and public opinion supervision and illegal and criminal activities such as extortion under the guise of negative news reporting in the handling of post deletion extortion cases.
