Pay for emotions, seize the opportunity of healing economic development

2024-12-12

As described in the sketch "The Clock Worker", whether it's "spending money on food and drink", "spending money on music", or "spending money on beauty" or "spending money on massage", for more and more consumers, "making oneself happy" is the true happiness, and emotional value is becoming more important. The Annual Report on the Protection of Consumer Rights and Interests in China (2023) released by the China Consumers Association shows that in 2024, in addition to pursuing cost-effectiveness, emotional release will become an important factor affecting the decision-making of the younger generation of consumers, and is expected to become a new consumption hotspot in the future. The healing economy is another emerging business model born from the strong growth of emotional consumption demand. The so-called healing is actually a kind of "treatment". However, the treatment here focuses on "emotions" and "spirit". From psychological counseling to aromatherapy, to pet companionship, this field encompasses a variety of products and services that can help people reduce stress and heal their minds. In addition to the tangible healing products and services mentioned above, more healing services are intangible and do not have physical products. For example, "Electronic Muyu" is a virtual decompression product. In fact, for consumers, the key to healing is not the form of products and services, but a positive response to individual emotional needs, which reflects the evolution of social culture and consumption concepts. The "Report on the Development of National Mental Health in China (2021-2022)" shows that the anxiety and depression levels of the 13-34 age group in China are higher than those of other age groups. Many young people are facing more pressure in terms of work, family, and health, and need to pay attention to their emotional health. The characteristics of their consumption needs have also shifted from functional to emotional. Demand drives supply, and supply creates demand. The healing economy has become a new trend in consumption, and businesses naturally will not miss this opportunity. According to statistics from a certain platform, the supply of healing services has rapidly increased since 2023, with an average of over 1000 new service offerings launched each month, and "healing+SPA" accounting for over 70%. According to other data, there are currently over 3700 patents related to "emotions" in the market. Various businesses are actively creating new consumption scenarios, launching various "better for themselves" products and services, not only bringing new experiences to consumers, but also creating new growth points for the market. Like many new things, the development of healing economy is also accompanied by the troubles of growth. At present, due to the low entry barriers for professionals and the lack of management standards, there are more or less some irregularities in the industry, such as leaking consumer privacy, providing improper services, unreasonable fees, and illegal institutions using the gimmick of "healing" to brainwash consumers, and even committing fraud and wealth accumulation. The healthy development of an industry cannot be achieved without sound regulation, scientific norms, and unified standards. The development and improvement of the healing economy is also a continuous process of "healing". On the one hand, relevant departments should attach importance to the positive driving role of emotional release consumption, guide according to the situation, and continuously stimulate the vitality of healing economic consumption; On the other hand, it is also necessary to strengthen quality supervision, guide relevant institutions and practitioners to self regulate, so as to promote the healthy development of the industry and protect consumer rights. In addition, the effectiveness of healing varies greatly among individuals, as emotional value is something that cannot be seen or touched, and cannot be measured by standards such as data. Therefore, consumers should also pay attention to rational judgment to prevent "paying for emotions" from becoming "paying for impulsiveness" when they are "on top of emotions". Of course, to better transform emotional value into commercial value, the key still depends on how merchants choose. The true healing of consumers through the healing economy relies on sincerity, not false tricks, and the focus is on products and services, not marketing gimmicks. (New Society)
