The completion and opening of the Macau Bridge

2024-10-04

On the morning of October 1st at 11 o'clock, the Macao Special Administrative Region held a grand ceremony for the completion of the Macao Bridge. Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Edmund Ho Hau wah, Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region, He Yicheng, and Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao Special Administrative Region, Zheng Xincong, unveiled the plaque for the completion of the Macao Bridge. At 14:00 in the afternoon, the Macau Bridge was officially opened to traffic. The Macau Bridge is the fourth cross sea bridge connecting the Macau Peninsula to Taipa. It is the first two-way eight lane cross sea bridge in Macau, with a total length of 3.085 kilometers, including a 2.86 kilometer cross sea section. The structural design service life is 100 years. In his speech, He Yicheng stated that the Macau Bridge is an important transportation infrastructure adjacent to the Hong Kong Zhuhai Macau Bridge. It not only improves the overall transportation layout of Macau, but also creates more convenient travel conditions for residents and tourists, further assisting Macau in building a world tourism and leisure center, and promoting sustainable improvement of people's livelihood and moderate diversified economic development. It is reported that the Macau Bridge started construction in March 2020, took 1447 days to complete, and was opened to traffic in 1650 days. It is the most difficult cross sea bridge in Macau's engineering construction. For the first time, the full casing follow-up clear water pile forming process has been widely adopted in deepwater bridges. Under aviation height restrictions and complex working water conditions, technologies such as the installation and erection of large tonnage steel beams have been used, and a total of 33 invention patents have been obtained. The Macau Bridge is not only an important "axis" in Macau's "dual ring dual axis expressway", but also a key node in the construction of Macau's urban transportation system. With the completion and opening of the Macau Bridge, Macau's urban transportation system has become more complete, further interconnected with neighboring cities, and helped Macau achieve better development in integrating into the national development plan.
