President of Türkiye: Turkey and Egypt share a common position on the Palestinian issue

2024-09-06

Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on the 4th that Türkiye and Egypt share a common position on the Palestinian issue. On the same day, Erdogan held talks with visiting Egyptian President Sisi in Ankara on bilateral relations and the Israeli Palestinian situation, and co chaired the establishment meeting of the high-level strategic cooperation committee between the two countries. Subsequently, the leaders of the two countries jointly witnessed the signing of a series of cooperation documents. Erdogan said at a joint press conference after the talks that the Palestinian issue is the top priority of the two leaders' talks. Both countries agree that Israel should first cease its attacks on the Gaza Strip and then achieve a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The leaders of the two countries agreed to hold regular talks to find solutions to regional hotspot issues. Erdogan said that Sisi's visit is another measure to further promote the relationship between the two countries, and "we are constantly strengthening the deeply rooted relationship between the two countries". He stated that Turkey and Egypt are steadily moving towards the goal of achieving a bilateral trade volume of 15 billion US dollars in the next five years. At the press conference, Saisi said that Egypt and Türkiye unanimously called for a ceasefire in Gaza and urged Israel to end the violent conflict in the West Bank. Sisi said that Egypt and Türkiye have many things in common, and cooperation between the two countries is increasing. He stated that Erdogan's visit to Egypt in February this year provided impetus for the development of bilateral relations. After the fall of former Egyptian President Morsi in 2013, relations between Egypt and Türkiye deteriorated, and the two countries downgraded their diplomatic relations. Starting from 2021, high-level diplomats from Egypt and Turkey have held consultations. Last July, Egypt and Türkiye resumed diplomatic relations to the ambassadorial level and exchanged ambassadors. In February of this year, Erdogan visited Egypt for the first time in over a decade. (New Society)
