Why did the European "Typhoon" fighter jet become popular?

2024-09-05

According to the bi monthly website of National Interest on September 1st, the European Typhoon fighter jet is one of the most successful fourth generation fighter jets in history. This aircraft, abbreviated as "Typhoon" (which gives it a more powerful image), proves Europe's collaborative development strength in military aviation. Typhoon "was jointly developed by European countries such as Italy, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom. The Typhoon is not only an impressive fighter jet, but also a technological miracle and proof of strategic cooperation. For the European Union, despite various claims, it is only an economic and trade union, not a military alliance. Nevertheless, the European "Typhoon" fighter jet remains a symbol of Europe's desire to move towards military alliance while gradually moving towards economic interdependence. Decades ago, fantasists who dreamed of establishing the European Union believed that a military alliance would ultimately lead to political unity. From the late 1970s to the early 1980s, major Western European countries began to unite and plan the development of domestic multi-purpose fighter jets. The project was initially referred to as the 'Eurofighter', aiming to create an aircraft capable of performing various tasks from aerial combat to ground attack, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare. In 1983, this grand collaboration was officially launched. The first prototype made its maiden flight in 1994. In the end, this aircraft was named "Typhoon" in 1998 and officially entered service in 2003. This aircraft adopts a delta wing and duck shaped layout, with extremely strong maneuverability. These duckwings increase the aircraft's lifespan and control capability under high angle of attack conditions. Although this terrifying creature does not have the true stealth capability of the F-22A Raptor, Typhoon has some stealth features, especially low observability. Therefore, the effective cross section of the "typhoon" radar is greatly reduced. This fighter jet also uses radar absorbent materials. Two EJ200 engines provide power for this fighter jet, enabling it to have supersonic cruise capability, thereby improving fuel efficiency and expanding its combat range. As for the weapons and equipment, this fighter jet can carry various air-to-air and air to ground missiles as well as guided bombs for combat, and is also equipped with a 27mm caliber Mauser BK27 aircraft gun. Typhoon has advanced radar and missile systems, which means that this aircraft also performs well in aerial dogfighting and beyond visual range combat. In addition, the advanced targeting pod on this aircraft makes it the perfect tool for ground attack missions. It can also interfere with enemy radar and communication. This aircraft has been exported to several countries outside the original developing countries, including Austria, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, due to its outstanding performance, highlighting its international appeal. This fighter jet has undergone multiple upgrades, which means it remains competitive even compared to more modern fighter jets. For example, the Typhoon 3A batch fighter jets have advanced sensors and improved electronic warfare capabilities, and can be better integrated with NATO systems. Decades after its initial launch, the "Typhoon" fighter jet project continues to develop. No matter how the European integration process evolves, this aircraft is a highly competitive platform that is widely favored. France, Germany, and Spain have joined the Future Air Combat System, while the UK is developing its sixth generation Storm fighter jet. However, the European "Typhoon" fighter jet project is still the most successful joint development plan without the participation of Americans. (New Society)
