The Digital Policy Office (Digital Office) under the Innovation, Technology and Industry Bureau (ITB) was officially established today (July 25th). The Digital Office will be responsible for leading the promotion of data, citizen, and results based digital policies within the government and different sectors, enhancing government efficiency and services, with the aim of enabling citizens and businesses to benefit more through digital government and smart city construction. The Digital Office is led by a Digital Policy Specialist and has three departments: Digital Government, Data Governance, and Digital Infrastructure. Each department formulates relevant policies and measures to drive the construction of a digital government and promote the application of advanced information technology in various bureaus/departments, innovating in public services; Promote data openness, sharing, and analytical applications through data governance policies; And strengthen digital infrastructure and security, promote industrial development, and deepen cooperation with the mainland, including measures to facilitate cross-border data flow and "cross-border connectivity" government services. Professor Sun Dong, Director of the Bureau of Innovation, Technology and Industry, said, "Digitization can help promote socio-economic development, enhance government operational efficiency, and innovate public services. Digital technology and data are also important elements driving high-quality development and new productivity. The Digital Office will advocate for digital policies based on innovative technology and data, fully leading government bureaus/departments to use innovative technology to optimize public services, implement more convenient digital government measures for the people and businesses, and meet the constantly changing needs and public expectations in the digital age." The establishment of the Digital Office is one of the new measures in the Chief Executive's 2023 Policy Address, with the aim of accelerating the construction of a digital government by merging the former Office of the Government Chief Information Officer (OGCIO) and the Efficiency Promotion Office (Efficiency Office). The establishment of the Digital Office involves the restructuring and resource integration of the Information and Efficiency Offices under the Innovation and Technology Bureau. The relevant proposals were passed by the Legislative Council in mid-2024. (New Society)
