Safer and Faster: Hong Kong Police Force to Replace Domestic Pistols

2024-07-12

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Police Force held a press conference on the 11th to announce the plan to replace handguns. The police stated that after multiple rounds of strict selection and approval, two domestically produced 9mm pistols have been selected and purchased for use by frontline military and criminal unit personnel. According to the police, the newly purchased semi-automatic handgun will gradually replace the Smith&Wesson Model 10 revolver used by current military personnel and the SIG Sauer P250 semi-automatic handgun used by criminal unit personnel. The police stated that the design of the new semi-automatic handgun is more in line with the grip size of Asians, and can meet the operational needs of the police force in key indicators such as safety, operating speed, and stability. Deng Ziliang, Chief Inspector of the Firearms Training Division of the Police Force, introduced the three major advantages of the new semi-automatic handgun: in terms of safety, it allows police officers to actively set the handgun to safe mode to reduce the risk of accidental firing; In terms of speed, replacing the magazine is simple and fast, replenishing bullets faster, and improving the ability of firearms to be on guard; In terms of stability, there are multiple balanced and stable designs that enhance the accuracy and controllability of shooting. Police Support Department Superintendent Gao Zhuoheng pointed out that the new semi-automatic pistol training course will be conducted in stages. The first batch of personnel to receive training comes from the stormtroopers, mobile units, rapid response units, and the headquarters criminal department. After completing the training, they will be equipped with new pistols for duty starting from July 25th. According to current resources, the police force can have about 2000 personnel receive new pistol training every year. (New Society)
