Camouflage Green Protects the "First Bend of the Yellow River" - A Record of Military and Civilian Cooperation in Maqu County, Gansu Province to Carry out Ecological Environment Protection of the Yellow River
2024-06-05
During the Mengxia season, the vast grasslands in Maqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province gradually turned green. Led by Jia Cao, the Minister of Armed Forces of Oula Town, the militia ecological patrol team carefully inspected the situation of damaged and missing seedlings in the sand blocking forest along the banks of the Yellow River. The Yellow River, originating from the Bayan Kara Mountains on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, forms the first major bend of the Yellow River when flowing through Maqu County, known as the "First Bend of the Yellow River". Maqu is the only pure pastoral county in Gansu, with grassland area accounting for 90% of the total county area. This provides a good water source conservation area for the Yellow River, which is known as "the Yellow River originates in Qinghai and forms in Maqu". However, due to various factors, the once lush Maqu grassland has experienced ecological problems such as grassland degradation and rampant sand, resulting in a decreasing amount of water replenishment to the Yellow River year by year. "Since I started elementary school, the grassland has been desertified, and my dad often sighs and sighs when he comes back from grazing." Talking about the past scenes, Renqing, a 36 year old herdsman from Eula Town, couldn't help but feel deeply moved. In his memory, the grassland used to be covered with sand dunes of all sizes, sparse plant roots and stems exposed, and on the brink of withering. In 2021, the integrated protection and restoration project of mountains, waters, forests, fields, lakes, grasses, and sands in the upstream water source conservation area of the Yellow River in Gannan was included in the first ten Chinese "mountain and water engineering" projects in the 14th Five Year Plan. Taking this as an opportunity, the Gannan Military Sub district has issued the Implementation Measures for Militia's Participation in the Integrated Protection and Restoration Project of Mountains, Rivers, Forests, Fields, Lakes, Grasslands, and Sands, fully leveraging the advantages of strong disciplinary awareness and familiarity with social conditions and the people. The "Militia+Ecological Patrol Officer" model has been adopted, and a Militia Ecological Patrol Team has been established along the Yellow River in Maqu County, dividing the area into sections and assigning responsibilities to individuals, actively assisting local governments in environmental protection and ecological restoration work. "This is a cause that has contributed to the present and benefited the future." Herdsman Gazang Gabu is an old militia member who has been in the ecological patrol team for nearly 11 years. Since joining, whether it is gathering with friends or visiting relatives and friends, environmental protection has been a topic he must talk about. "My family used to have 400 cows and over 200 sheep, but now they have sold more than half of them. Although it has affected my income, the environment in my hometown is getting better and better, and personal losses are not a big deal!" Herdsman Ciren Lamao was a junior high school classmate of Gazang Gabu. Under his influence, Ciren Lamao not only reduced the number of livestock raised, but also used his rich experience in animal husbandry to provide suggestions for grassland desertification control and the construction of sand blocking forest belts for conservation and conservation. Maqu County is located on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. Due to its high altitude, cold climate, and short plant growth period, there are relatively few experiences to learn from in desertification control techniques, making desertification control very difficult. After years of experimentation, demonstration, and summary, the military and civilian sectors of Maqu County have jointly explored and implemented a suitable sand dune management model of "land preparation+planting and irrigation+grass grid+fertilization+soil improvement+artificial grass planting+fence", which has effectively managed the desertified land. That forest is the tree planting responsibility area of our military division, covering over 200 acres. In 2022, in order to achieve the goal of afforestation, the military district organized more than 1000 officers, soldiers, and militia to participate in a tree planting battle Jia Cao pointed to a hillside filled with small saplings several hundred meters away from the Yellow River and told reporters that in order to improve the survival rate of saplings, everyone has come up with many methods, such as improving the soil to avoid the seedlings being "unsuitable for the water and soil", putting "clothes" on the seedlings to resist the cold, and giving them "drops" to prevent diseases and pests. Militia treat saplings with care like their own children. With the hard work of countless people, Maqu County has managed a total of 371900 acres of desertified land and 1.2252 million acres of degraded grasslands of the "black soil beach" type. The comprehensive vegetation coverage rate of the grassland has reached 98.4%, and the proportion of excellent forage has significantly increased. The Maqu grassland has seen a gratifying change of "sand retreating and green advancing". "In recent years, more and more people have come to visit the Maqu grassland for tourism, leading to phenomena such as tourists driving over grasslands, camping in the wild, and littering, which have caused damage to the grassland ecology." During the patrol of Xike River Forest Farm, the forest ranger and militia platoon leader, Radish Zangke, discovered several tourists driving an off-road vehicle into the grassland and immediately stopped their behavior of damaging the grassland. In recent years, according to the principle of "full-time protection in key areas and regular inspections in general areas", the Gannan Military Sub district has arranged ecological patrol teams to strengthen patrols and inspections during the peak tourism season, ensuring that the achievements of grassland desertification control and ecological restoration are not damaged. The person in charge of the Natural Resources Bureau of Maqu County introduced that with the continuous improvement of ecology, the population of wild animals on the Maqu grassland has been increasing year by year. Tibetan antelopes and rock sheep, which were previously only seen during high-altitude grazing, now frequently appear in people's sight. As of now, the population of Tibetan antelopes and rock sheep in Muxihe Township, Maqu County has reached 5000. Every October, as many as 30000 migratory birds fly to the Ma Qu River Qu Horse Farm and the Langqu Qiaoke Wetland in Manri Ma Town to settle, and a large number of rare birds such as black storks, black necked cranes, spotted geese, and red ducks use this place as the starting point for southward migration. "As a militia, we have a responsibility to protect every plant and tree here, making the mother river of our motherland clearer and more beautiful." Standing on the Maqu Yellow River Bridge, gazing at a slowly flowing river of clear water, Ke Zhibu Daoji, the Party branch secretary and ecological patrol team member of Xiheqiang Village in Muxihe Township, said that he is proud to contribute to the ecological protection of the Yellow River.
